Celebrity Ice Game
January 27, 2003
The Penn State Altoona Roller Hockey Team will be participating in a rare home competition for the club. On Sunday, February 9, 2003, at 5 p.m. at Galactic Ice, the team will trade in their roller blades for ice skates and a match with the Pittsburgh Celebrity Hockey Team.
The game will serve as a fundraiser for the club, and the club will make a $500 donation to the Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Celebrity Team is excited to bring their squad to Altoona for a friendly ice hockey game that is for a great cause. Although the team does not announce who will be coming until just several days prior to the event, the 22-man roster includes several noteworthy names:
Craig Patrick ? General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins
Joey Mullen ? Former Penguins player, current Asst. Coach
Jay Caufield ? Former Penguins player, Mario Lemieux?s fitness trainer when he returned to the NHL
Dwayne Rupp ? Former Penguins Player
Larry Richard ? KDKA
Kevin Colbert ? Director of Football Operations, Pittsburgh Steelers
Guy Junker ? Fox Sports Net, Pittsburgh
Bill Hurley ? Former Pittsburgh Steeler
As you can see, it should be a star-filled event if only but a few of them are able to make it to the game. Whatever the case, it should be a great night for hockey.
General admission tickets are on sale for $5 each through the Roller Hockey Club. Children 6 and under are admitted free. If you can make it to the event, be sure to dress warm, as the rink is notably chilly inside. If you have any questions, please feel to contact me at [email protected].
Thanks for your time, and we hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Mike Bowman

The results

The event turned out to be a great success. Not only did the 200+ people in attendance have a great time, but we also were able to cover all our expenses even after our donations to the Pittsburgh Children's Hospital.
We lost the game 11-5, but were quite competitive throughout, considering our roller hockey status. Although Joey Mullen and Craig Patrick had to cancel at the last minute due to a Penguin's Charity Carnival being held at the Mellon Arena, there were some notable celebs present. Former Pittsburgh Steelers Bill Hurley and Justin Strelczyk played, in addition to Duane Rupp, a former Penguin. Also playing for the celebrity team were Guy Junker of Fox Sports Pittsburgh, Mike Prisuita of the WDVE Morning Sports Team, Brad Frateroll - Norther Michigan University alumni, Dee Rizzo - Reich Hockey Group & Michigan State Alumni, and Michael Lang, Pittsburgh Penguins PR Assistant.
Afterwards the team took time to get a photo with our squad, and signed autographs before leaving. They were very appreciative of our work, and said they'd be glad to hook up with us again in the future.
We were also fortunate to have gotten our University CEO and Dean to attend the event, as well as have our Director of Student Affairs and our director of Club and IM Sports to be our honorary coaches and stand on our bench.
The event was a huge success.
Thanks
Mike Bowman
