Referees Last Weekend

We attended the Coastal Cup tournament in Columbia, SC this past weekend. As usual, the tournament was fun and well run. I just wanted to compliment the work done by the referees. This was the best referee work from any tournament we have attended in two years.

What made the officiating noteworthy. I am a referee and have done a number of College level games but mainly youth programs. I am thinking they called the holding and stick work but let the bumping/body-ing go some. Officiating if very inconsistent just yet. I would like to see improvement in the inline world.

Hey,

As an official for youth and men's league hockey, I find the most difficult part of the job is the inconsistency between rules and rinks.

For example, the youth program that I am director of adheres to USA Inline rules and regulations, with a few house rules to deter fighting and other unsportsmanlike conduct. Standard inline hockey stuff.

However, some leagues in the area play offsides, icing and by rules that seem to combine about six different rulebooks and three different sports.

I would like to see a uniform inline hockey standard set. if you do not play by that standard, you may not consider yourself an inline league. Let's put it this way; how many ice hockey leagues do you see that don't have icing? that count a high stick as a two or even FIVE minute penalty? that allow different number of players on the floor at a time, or goalies to wear sneakers, or balls vs. puck, or goalie delay of game penalties, or crease rules? Ice hockey leagues for the most part play by the same rules.... why shouldn't we?

Referees would be a lot less noticable in the inline world if they didn't have to constantly second-guess their calls because they have to remember what league, sanction, and age group they are officiating in before they can accurately make a call.

Just a thought...

They did a good job of callling things that occurred away from the puck. They were also very consistent. They let them play. Bumping was allowed while playing the puck, it was not tolerated away from the puck.
