    College Scholarships

Ran into someone recently who told me several schools were giving out scholarships for inline hockey- while I know that the college game is growing, I did not think it had yet reached sholarship or even financial aid status yet-anyone hear anything about ths subject??

From what I have heard, they have been getting a fund together, I think this has been on going since 99'. But they cannot give out scholarships untill the sport is recognised under the NCAA.

Yes they can, and they do. Lindenwood gives out scholarships now. They currently are the only school.

    Not So Quick

    Dave & IHC Readers:

The statement that Lindenwood U gives out roller hockey scholarships needs to be clarified and I do not have the full story.

What I do know from the questions I have asked is that any Lindenwood U player who receives a scholarship is receiving an ACADEMIC scholarship or other form of financial support (grants, loans, etc.) Practically every student at Lindenwood U receives some form of financial support. These players are not receiving roller hockey-specific scholarships.

Again, I do not have the full story, but this is the information I have gathered after doing some research on the rumor.

All i know is what i heard. Lindenwood tried to recruit our goalie, Steve Kampf, to play for them last year. They supposedly offered him a "scholarship", larger than most financial aid packages, to play rollerhockey at their school. Now, if the money is given as a grant or whatever i'm not sure, but the intent was to give that money so that Steve would play rollerhockey for them. Again, that is what i have heard, and maybe it is different now.

Would that be in any way illegal to give an "athletic" scholarship to a club sport player? Wouldn't the NCAA flip over that?

    Re: College Scholarships

As a player for Lindenwood i want to assure u that no one on this team recived a full ride schlorship to play for this school. Most of us did recive finical aid but almost every student that attends Lindenwood recives it. That being said i saw an intresting quote in the state news, "But coach Réjean Tremblay said he was proud of his team?s character while matching up against Lindenwood, which awards full scholarships to its players." This is totaly false. First your coach accuses us of flipping off the corwd at nationals and now he spreads false rumors about us. That just makes your coach look like an idiot for sperading crap like that. Now to end it with a quote from Dave Kozlowski, "maybe if your coach worried a little less about what Lindenwood did and more about his team than you would have given us a game."

The Southwest Collegiate Hockey League (schl.org) offered the first league scholarship this past season. Although the scholarship was only $650.00, it was the first step in an exciting program for the SCHL. The SCHL hopes to increase the amount awarded each season. For more info on the SCHL, check out our website at www.schl.org.

I don't think the NCAA has any jurisdiction over club sports. However, if the individual universities wanted to regulate the ability of club sports to give out any kind of scholarship or financial incentives they could do so. I doubt the NCAA has the ability to regulate what a club team does. Since the CRHL is not subject to the NCAA rules and regulations in any way, I believe that teams are allowed to give out scholarships.

I seem to recall an old post by you stating how embarrassed you were for going to Lindenwood and now you defend them? geesh and if it was such a great school how come you left? Stop dwelling in the past. Since you left they do offer practically full scholarships my good friend Geoff Cary was told by Lindenwood he would only have to pay 10% of his education. So technically thats not a full ride but its pretty close. A lot closer than any other school in the entire nation.

    Re: Not So Quick

Hmmm My close friend barely passed high school yet he's an amazing hockey player and he was offered that so called Academic Scholarship from Lindenwood. There is always a way around the technicalities. In Salt lake City for the Team USA Jr. Camp all the players were offered that so called academic scholarship? So how would they know there grades? surely not by playing hockey. I know this for a fact.
