I just wanted to throw it out there that over the past couple years Millersville University has been undergoing some major renovations to its student center. They pretty much tore down the entire building and are building a brand new gym which is going to include a multi-purpose indoor sport court hockey rink. It will be just like the rinks you see at Feasterville, Marple. The project is slated to be completely finished this upcoming spring semester of 2011.

It will also be used for things like indoor field hockey and soccer, but the university director of recreation has assured the roller hockey team it can practice twice a week for two hours each practice.

Now, I don't even know if there will be a Millersville team in ECRHA this year. As you can see by our most recent record, our team pretty much fell apart last year with guys quitting before the season started or just not showing up to tournaments. There are a number of talented core guys who are trying to keep it together for this upcomming year, and I just figured I'd inform the general public of this project in case some prospective college students are on the fence about what school they want to go to...Why not come to Millersville? Bring along a bunch of your fellow talented teammates, be able to walk to practice each night, start your own legacy.

I guess this sounds like a sales pitch, but I personally don't have enough credits to play before I graduate this semester. I'd just hate to see this rink go unused. I would have killed for it to have been finished while I was playing here.

Just for the record, if you're graduating this fall, two NCRHA eligibility rules you may be interested in (check out the League Operations Manual for full wording) are below. Note that some school have rules that prohibit participating in clubs if you're not full time or if you've graduated, so you will want to check with your school to make sure you're not breaking any rules there, either.

- Seniors in their last semester can take fewer than 9 credits if they are fulfilling their final graduation requirements
- People who graduate in the fall/winter semester can complete the NCRHA season as long as club sports will sign off on the player's participation.

I sent an e-mail out to the Millersville Club Sports Director asking about this rule, and he replied:

"For liability reasons only students enrolled during the semester they are playing are eligible to play. If you graduate at the end of the Fall semester you would not be eligible to participate with the club unless you were enrolled in Graduate School at Millersville University."

This doesn't seem to make sense to me as a reason to not allow graduates to participate. Could it be that he doesn't understand the league and that we have insurance through USA hockey? Are there any documents I could show him that would be helpful, such as relevant sections of the rule book or something?

I just wouldn't tell the school and keep on playing honestly. The ECHRA has no issues with it and I highly doubt the school is going to catch you. If they do, what are they gonna do to you anyways?

That would be tempting, however the school does pretty much fund the whole team so they could impose some sort of financially penalty for using non-approved players.

Section V. Player Eligibility and Standards

D. Academic requirements

ii - Student athletes shall be eligible to participate in their program according to that school's standards.


From this part of the manual, I'm betting ECHRA would have a problem with this.

I don't agree with the schools stance and I would work to change it, but if they do not, then that's the way it is.

The league has no problem with allowing it, as long as the school provides proof that they allow the player to continue playing.

I think you are better served actually meeting face to face with him to have the conversation. I wouldn't put it past a CSD to just read it and say no without actually looking into the situation.

If a meeting with him doesn't prove fruitful, schedule a meeting with the President of the University and see where it goes from there.

I personally know of a few players this applied to at Shippensburg and the school signed off on each and every one of them. I can't imagine the schools are playing by a vastly different set of rules.

Like I said before, what do you have to lose?

I sent an e-mail back further explaining the ECRHA rules and asking if we could meet to further discuss this issue, his response:

"I understand the commitment you have put into the club and the desire to finish out the year but the rules still stand. Participants in club sports activities must be registered students for the semester that they are participating in. Since you are registered for the fall semester you may participate in the fall semester. You may not participate in the Spring semester unless you register for classes. There are no exceptions to this rule. Clubs that allow non students to participate will face the loss of funding and removal from the Club Sport Council."

He's pretty adamant about not letting it happen, probably not even worth the headache of trying to fight it.

You should just forge a letter from club sports.
