Does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to fly with goalie equipment? The airlines charge a fortune for oversize/overweight bags.

First, call the carrier and see if you can get a waiver on the fees for team travel with athletic equipment - some airlines will do this for you without a problem, especially if they know that your team has booked a dozen or so seats for the flight.
If they will not, you can try splitting up your equipment into your teammates' bags or potentially look at shipping them via UPS or something like that.
if you tie them together you can have them as your carry on item. i know a goalie that did this before, its an option and will save you $$$. you can put your clothes bag in your hockey bag if you take the pads as a carry on.

Or you can fly southwest where bags fly free. Its on!!
