CONGRATULATIONS SAN DIEGO METRO!
On behalf of the many volunteer organizers, coaches, parents and players who comprise the scholastic level of our sport, I would like to extend a hardy congratulations to the San Diego Metro Conference High School Inline Hockey League - the only CIF-sanctioned league in California and only state sanctioned league the US - as it proudly celebrates its 10th year of competition.
The cover story on this month's California Rubber magazine (http://www.calirubber.com/), author Phillip Brents, the magazine's inline hockey editor, writes brilliantly about the genesis of the San Diego Metro Conference, the many milestones it has achieved and the bright future ahead for the league and for the sport. You can read the stories online at the magazine's site, or pickup a print edition at a California rink or pro shop near you.
While some may be easily distracted and focus to the topside of the pyramid, the importance of the scholastic level of our sport can not be understated. These times are trying and the scholastic (high school and middle school) programs struggle with waning volunteerism, the economic impacts of state budget cuts onto student athletics, the economy and increasing costs onto families many who are facing un/under-employment, changing academic curricula, influences of other sports competing for players (i.e. Lacrosse), players aging up and out, and much, much more. To have a leading example such as the San Diego Metro Conference forging their way forward, in this observer's opinion, gives us hope for our sport's longevity and stands as a beacon for others.
