Thanks for posting this Rich!
I'm sure this has happened to schools across the country. You start a team, mainly because there is a local rink to play at, and a lot of kids go to the local college. Then the rink turns indoor soccer, and the closest rink is over an hour away.
Sonoma State has had to overcome that scenario. And this year they even put in a B team for the first time! The interest and dedication are there. Add to that their team rep Dan Freeman had a season-ending injury in 07-08 (MCL I believe) and got injured again in the first half of this season. The coaching, and other players stepping up, have kept Sonoma State moving this season.
They definitely were the sleeper, making a quiet playoff run in the 2nd half of the season. It came down to their last game against UC Santa Cruz. The teams played each other twice on Feb 7-8, and UCSC won the first match on Saturday night. Sunday morning both teams were basically 1 point/win out of the playoffs and Sonoma State avenged the loss from the night before, earning them their first ever playoff spot.
The Sonoma State team has been in existence since before the NCRHA's inception, but did not have a team in the 2005-2006 season. The team has not had a winning season since 2003-2004, when they went to the NCRHA National Championships for their only appearance.
Congrats to Sonoma State for a great run so far. Keep up the great work organizationally and on the rink!

Hi Brennan,
You're welcome.
What is ironic is that our sport has been through eras of not enough rinks to play in, then a surplus of facilities, and now it seems that we may have come full-circle.
Keep up the good work on the collegiate front. You and your predecessors have worked hard for many years to give thousands of college-age players first-class tournaments to compete in, and much more.
Sincerely,
Richard Graham
