    2008 "Unofficial" IHC Awards

UPDATED 10-29-08. Let's get EVERYONE involved.

I've had this idea for awhile and I thought now with only about 8 weeks left until the end of 2008 and all of the constant BS going on between people on the board that this would be a perfect time to start putting stuff together for the

2008 "Unofficial (As of now)" IHCForums Awards

Categories will be selected by everyone on the board. If you have ideas for one, PM it and it will be added to the list. If you have ANY ideas, let's hear them!

Think of the awards as "Of The Year," meaning "Best Team" is similar to Team Of The Year.

    Ideas for Categories SO FAR:

    Best Team (Pro, Youth, College)

    Best Comeback

"Inspiration of the Year" IHC Award (Something that brought the inline hockey community together for a cause)

    Top Breakthrough Player

Ambassador IHC Award (The individual who best shows dedication to growing the sport of inline hockey)

    Biggest Upset

Best Game (Any Pro, College, or Youth game)

International Team IHC Award (Given to the team who best showed their skill at a North American/World event; NO U.S. or Canadian teams)

Best Dangle IHC Award (Needs video/photo for submission)

Best Media IHC Award (The best photo/video capturing something "real" to inline hockey supporters; needs submission)

Breakthrough Product (Can be anything from equipment to a type of surface, pucks, etc.)

Although categories haven't been selected, if you want to nominate someone for a categorie early that's okay, just PM or post on here the nominee and category name. If you have media you can PM me the link or email me with pictures at [email protected]

After categories have been officially chosen, there will be some form of online voting where YOU, the people, can help pick the winners.

This is meant to be fun and a way to "celebrate" our sport and what was accomplished in the inline hockey world in 2008. Let this be fun and don't take this too seriously.

PM me with any questions, comments, or suggestions.

    Thanks,

Are you going to tell us what categories you already have to get us going?

    Great Idea Kevin!!!!

I miss these - was it 1998 or 99 that IHC had this last....

Richard, where are you on this....get it together!!! lol, jk take your time

I think we should have some kind of awards with the sport every year

I've got something in the works right now here in Vegas that might help next year - BIG project...we'll see, living out here isnt so bad I guess, new things can happen

    Re: 2008 "Unofficial" IHC Awards

    Hi Kevin,

This is a good idea... as long as it remains virtual.

As Adam mentioned later in this thread, I used to host InLine Hockey News and Inline Hockey Central Awards ceremonies. The last time I did one, I believe in 2001, in Las Vegas, I lost my shirt. Gameworks was the host, they burned me by serving a cheap beer so that I didn't meet the minimum bar tab, and I lost about $1,000 on the event instead of making a dime. And one equipment manufacturer's representative told me, "Why should I pay for dinner when I can eat in Las Vegas for free?" With inline hockey "supporters" like that, I'm not surprised that the sport took a nosedive.

So, Kevin, a virtual awards ceremony is a great idea. I do think, however, that you have far too many categories. If you and other IHC readers can whittle that down to a manageable 10 or so, maybe Mike Burke and I can create some sort of poll that can't be cheated or gamed.

I appreciate your passion and ideas. Keep 'em coming.
    Sincerely,

    Richard,

It's now been narrowed down to 11 (Only counting Best Team once, which has 3 categories/winners). The Breakthrough Product award could go if it needs to go down to 10, but I think 11 is reasonable.

    Hi Kevin,

You might want to give IHC's readers a bit more chance for input, and I'd like a bit more time to think about it. Back in the day, we had some pretty good categories, and I haven't had a chance to reflect on those and compare them with yours. There's no need to be hasty. We could finalize the awards a month from now and give readers the entire month of December to make their selections, for instance.

Okay, you got it. The post has been updated to make the awards more interactive for everyone.

    Hi Kevin,

Good work. If there aren't a lot of ideas from IHC readers (or myself) between now and November 30, we'll go with what you've got and put up a poll. Thanks for lighting this fire. I love positive reader participation in this website!

OK, it's time for other IHC readers to pitch in. What categories that Kevin came up with should be dropped (if any)? Which should be added? Help us out here.

    Re: 2008 "Unofficial" IHC Awards

I was thinking it would be kind of a good gesture to name at least some of these awards after some of the people the roller hockey community has lost and possibly some that have made a positive impact on the sport. Also, maybe adding an award for player and individual for their efforts in the community might be a nice touch as well. I have read how some of the pro/elite teams (Doug...fire ants etc) have done a lot in their community. I think allowing the sport to be seen in a possible light by people who are not so familiar with it is a good thing for the sport. Just my ideas...

As the end of November creeps near us, I wanted to bring this thread attention one last time. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, let's hear them now. If not, we're gonna take the categories we have and get going on this in a few days.

But first wanna see what you guys think!
