what are the requirements for a graduate student?

what are the requirements for a graduate student? How many credit hours? Or does he have to just be enrolled in a graduate program?

iii. Student athletes shall be enrolled in a program of study leading to a
baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral degree as determined by the regulations of the university or college.
iv. Student athletes shall be degree-seeking according to that school’s definition of degree-seeking.
    v. Undergraduate students participating in Division I or II (or their respective B team) must carry a minimum credit requirement of nine (9) semester hours (or the equivalent quarter hours). Students participating in Division III(or their respective B team) must carry a minimum credit requirement of six (6) semester hours (or the equivalent quarter hours).

Basically, they need to be fully enrolled in a degree seeking program. Those students that are not in degree seeking programs are ineligible, basically meaning that you can not just 'sign up' for a class and be eligible- you must have applied and been accepted and subsequently enrolled in that program. But there is no actual number of credits that is used as a qualifier.

    Thanks for the information posted.

I will tell you that the NCRHA decided at their Annual Meeting this summer to increase the number of credits a graduate student needs to six (6). Anything less, the graduate student would need to submit a letter of appeal to the NCRHA (by emailing [email protected]).

The League Operations Manual is currently being revised, and will be posted by October 1st. Most notable are the changes to the Divisional Structure, a revised Mission Statement, and various other minor changes. All changes will be documented and easy for everyone to see (highlighted in gray).

If you have any questions, please email me directly at [email protected]

Re: what are the requirements for a graduate student?

Quick question for NCRHA... the graduate student rule change from 6 credit hours, when will that be taking effect? This season or next? And is that per semester or per year?

The reason I ask is that I have 2 players that were under the impression from last year's rules that they would be eligible to play by taking one class (3 cr hrs). Obviously there is the appeal option, but since this information won't be released officially until October of this year, will i have to file appeals now inorder to have them eligible by the ECRHA Columbus day preaseason event?

    Thanks.

    Frank,

I will have an answer for you next week. I anticipate the players being eligible for the Columbus Day event even if their appeals are still pending.

would students in graduate and professional degree programs that do not assign credits, i.e. research-based phd programs, medical school, etc., have to submit a letter of appeal to the ncrha?

Yes. To speed up the process, please include any corroborating documentation you may have along with the initial appeal.

Are there any updates on this ? Does it take affect this semester ? If it does, what are the requirements, timeframe, and procedures for petitioning for a waiver ?

Re: what are the requirements for a graduate student?

The 2008-2009 edition of the League Operations Manual has been posted at:

    http://www.ncrha.org/documents.php

I will make a general post on this, for discussion.

Please keep this thread specific to the Grad Student situation.

The previous rule for graduate students was not 3 credit hours, it simply stated that all students must be enrolled in a program and be degree-seeking:

" iii. Student athletes shall be enrolled in a program of study leading to a baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral degree as determined by the regulations of the university or college.
iv. Student athletes shall be degree-seeking according to that school’s definition of degree-seeking."

The new rule states that they must be enrolled in 2 graduate courses, in addition to the criteria above. The number of credits per graduate course can be anywhere from 1 to 5 credits, so putting a number to it did not make sense. The NCRHA Board of Directors came up with 2 graduate courses, because in theory that would be something like 6 credits, which was our initial thought.

All graduate students must fill out an additional piece of paperwork, which will be available next week. It simply asks for their information, their history with the team/any NCRHA team, their degree and major/area of study, and their courses for the semester.

For the 2008 Fall Semester/Quarter, the 2 course requirement will not be in effect. All students already enrolled for this semester will be eligible to play, provided they meet the old criteria of being enrolled in a program and that they are degree-seeking, and provided they fill out the additional piece of paperwork.

Beginning 2nd semester, there will still be the opportunity to appeal, should the graduate student be below the 2 course requirement. All items on the previously-mentioned form will be the basis for the appeal, as well as any written documentation the student can provide. Appeals should be sent via email to [email protected].

Please feel free to email the NCRHA at [email protected] with any questions/concerns, or post here and we will check periodically and respond.

    Thank you,

    Brennan Edwards
    Executive Director, NCRHA

Re: what are the requirements for a graduate student?

I am going to assume that the rule for undergrads, stating that they only need to take the minimum number of required classes to complete their graduation in their final semester of school, would still apply?

You are correct. If you look in the LOM, you'll see an additional line that states that the student in their final semester needs to provide proof of that to their Member Organization.

    Hi Brennan ,

You mention you will "check periodically and respond." Just in case you didn't know, you can choose to "subscribe" to a thread and be alerted when that thread is updated. FYI.

    Keep up the good work!

Re: what are the requirements for a graduate student?

What are some of the circumstances that will be taken into account for grad school? I know that in my personal situation I have a type of joint study where I'm taking 1 class a semester towards the completion of my MS and working 40 a week in part doing research towards my degree. I have "research hours" that I'll need to formally sign up for at some point but I often am doing research daily as it relates to my job. I also know that there are 2 or 3 other players on my team in similar situations and we selected the team this season under the impression that being enroled in grad school and working towards the completion of our degrees would be enough as per the original documents that were available last year, over the summer, and before tryouts.

I'm sure that the rule is to try and enforce some criteria on grad students when there weren't many hard ones in the past but I think this could screw up a lot of team's as I know others that have made selections based on graduate students being among the available players. I'm very concerned our team could almost fold as a result of the appeal process so if I could talk to someone outside of these forums I'd appreciate it. I'm not trying to circumvent the rules or anything but we selected our team based on the available rule book / information as I think many have. I'll be copying this in an email to [email protected] but just figured I'd put it here so others know there are people who could have serious issues with this.

Much as undergraduate students can petition to be permitted to play with < 9 credits, the same extenuating circumstances would likely apply for grad students. The spirit of the rule is to prevent people from signing up for the bare minimum for the sole purpose of being able to play hockey.

If you can demonstrate that you are working towards a degree and are supplementing your credits with school-supported research program, internship, co-op, etc, I have no doubt that your petition would be upheld nationally.

Re: what are the requirements for a graduate student?

    Quick things.

    • Are the appeals at the local or national level (just curious really)?
    • Do I have my guys submit appeals to Brennen or Burke (related to above)?
    • Do we do this THIS semester for next semester, next semester, or each semester?
    • Is the appeal based on 1st or 2nd semester credentials?
