    kodiaks and grizzlies

just curious as to why they both basically have the same logo? is one of the teams going to change their logo. reason i am asking is it seems a little unprofessional that two teams in the same league has the same logo. we have two pirates teams but their logos are way different, why doesnt the kodiaks and grizzlies do the same. but hey if they are comftorable with it thats fine, i was just wondering.

also this question is for dave garland. out there in saint louis you have a team called the pythons, right? but why is their mascot a cobra? hmmmm................., just creating conversation. still a little bummed about you guys beating us in the western conferance championship, hahah. We, the prowlers have a new home now and hopefully we can build on a fantastic year last year.

    Re: kodiaks and grizzlies

I believe the Pythons are being renamed the cobras this year. Thought that is what Dave told me last time we spoke.

As for the Prowlers. There always seems to be a lot of chatter about them on IHC, more then any other RMD team. Why can't we get them to step up and start filtering information a bit better through the proper channels, like the PIHA site and perhaps a site of there own? There never seems to be any flow of information from Colorado like in the ther areas, hopefully we can get that to change a bit this year.

As for the Kodiaks / Grizzlies. I was the one that put up the Kodiak logo, as I took it from their organization's website. I don't know that it is for sure their official PIHA logo, because I haven't received it from ACE. I'll be sure to mention this to Charley and to Chris Havelock.

    James,

The St. Louis Pythons are now the St. Louis Cobras due to everyone complaining about the type of snake.

Clearly that isn't the actual reason but they are renamed the Cobras 100% for sure.

They want the pro team to be indentified closer with their youth teams which makes sense.

Has anyone also noticed how the Swamp Donkeys (minors) logo looks like a moose? Just a thought...

I think the "C" in Kodiaks makes it different enough.

    Hi Wingman,

You are correct. Our logo is indeed that of a moose. The term "Swamp Donkey" is a slang used up here in New England for a moose.

Furthermore, before I get called out for this (and I know I will as there is already another topic discussing pirated logos) our logo is indeed similar to that of the AHL's Manitoba Moose logo. According to our lawyer, we've made enough changes to a basic angry or charging moose on our uniforms that would prevent us from any legal action regarding copyright infringement.

Now, if you check the term Swamp Donkey in the urban dictionary, you will find a very different meaning but that was certainly not our original intent.

20% that is all you need to change to anything to make unlike the original......trademark infringement is hard to enforce in todays world anyhow......I think their logos are totally different. Damn bears don't even look the same 2 me

    Re: kodiaks and grizzlies

The 20% or 30% rule or whatever you want is not by any means existant. This article http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive...usingly_s.aspx with information provided by Jim Aronowitz, associate general counsel at the Collegiate Licensing Company (who I'm gonna trust on this one, since his job is dealing specifically with copyright infringement for athletic logos and wordmarks for one of the biggest sports licensing companies in the world...) essentially says that that's not the case. Just saying.

to appease all that think this deeply into a logo, perhaps they should scrap the fierce looking bear and go for a Yogi type of look?...its a freakin BEAR!!! how much different can you make a bear? Bears have claws! ohhhhhhhh! it looks like the same exact claw!!!!! ewwwww...bad!! Oh look it has gnarling teeth just like that other team!!! (major eye rolling goes here)

    What I did this summer:

This summer I b*&#^ed about PIHA logos.

...and that Bandit logo doesn't look like a bandit it looks like a train robber. That Lunatic looks like a Jester. And that Tornado looks like a toilet bowl flush...

    Then I killed the babysitter!

This is probably one of the more amusing posts I've read in a while. Personally, I feel as though the Grizzlie is well defined , yet the Kodiak bear seems to be white, characteristic of a Polar Bear . . .ya know maybe we should get somebody from the Animal Planet Channel to consult PIHA teams before logo selection.

I gotta admit, you had me for a second

I think all PIHA teams should have constantly rotating logos, with no team keeping the same image for more than 1 week and 2 days. If managed correctly, that should mean no one knows which team is playing when they take the floor and we will, in fact, have to wear pinnies.

That would actually work pretty well:
The Pittsburgh Oranges vs. the Harrisburg Reds
The Scottsdale Blues vs. the Aston Blacks
    etc
    etc
    so on

Let's not get racial about this, Justin...

Me and the rest of the commie censorship-prone Reds are irate now.

I don't want AJ's message through this to get lost, though - similarity of logos in some cases may be treading on thin ice, but I hope that we do move past the completely unacceptable practice of teams just taking an old pro logo and slapping it on the front of their jerseys, especially when a well-designed logo can be had for less money than rink time for a weekend.

You'd be surprised at the number of ways in which you can represent a bear.

    Sincerely,

    Minnesota Wild
    Hershey Bears
    NARCh
    etc.

    Re: kodiaks and grizzlies

Each of our teams will be ordering 16 different jerseys this year. One per game. Each jersey will have a different version of a logo. We will then vote. I think it will only cost $50,000. No problem.

But seriously, logos are important. Brand recognition is important if you are building an organization. That being said, I don't think modifying logos is the worst thing in the world. I know nothing about design, however.

    Eh, go back to Cincinnati!

Seriously, I agree that an identifiable brand or logo is very important. I also agree that re-using old logos isn't the greatest idea. I was under the impression, however, that this was understood and is being addressed by most teams already, which I'm guessing isn't true after reading this. Where do we stand, because I'm lost ?
