Shoot out help

My son was selected to be a sniper in the statwars skills competition this year. He always seems to do well shooting on a goalie but when I watch him skate up I think he's skating to slow.
I guess what ever works is fine but what gives you the best odds shooting on a goalie. or any sure fire tips would be great.

Slow isn't necessarily a bad thing - good goaltenders can more easily handle someone skating quickly because they have less time in which to commit to a move.

The number one 'easy' thing he can do to greatly increase his chances of success in any breakaway situation is to carry the puck in a shooting position. A good goaltender knows that you can't shoot while you are stickhandling with the puck in front of your body, but when the puck is held off to the side in a shooting position the goaltender must respect the fact that you can shoot at any time.

I agree with Burke. The only other advice I'd give is...be comfortable lifting the puck after a deke. If he comes in slow, he should keep the puck close to him and lift it. No one likes seeing those pesky goalies make a last ditch desperation save because a shooter got lazy and thought he had a wide open net to just slide it in.

The moral of any story that starts with "how to..." and ends with "score goals" is force the goalie to move laterally and shoot the puck high.

This is a basic principal taught by most high-level ice coaches and rings even MORE true for inline because it's so much harder for goalies to move laterally (under control) on sport court than ice.

Just my two cents as a goalie...

I must be an idiot cause 90% of my breakaways i never let the puck leave the tile...actually i never shoot it at all..Im that guy that likes to go left, right, left, right, left, right, and then slide through the 5 hole on my backhand like 2 miles an hour. It really agitates the goalie because they expect something flashy outta me.

Thats fine for an experienced player. Not for a young kid trying to improve all around in the shoot-out. The truth is a shooter is at his best when he knows the goaltenders tendencies going in and adjust his moves accordingly.

At the highest levels, its a waiting game. The shooter has to sell a fake shot or deke to gain the advantage.

I hate to say it but if you score 90% of the time on that one move. You must be playing a new goalie every week. You'd get a big fat poke check from me

A dangerous sniper changes it up all the time and keeps the goalie guessing.

Carrying the puck in a shooting position and making sure you can lift it consistently are two great tips for a young shooter.

Stock backhander will work almost 90% of the time if you can lift it properly. It usually takes an above average goalie to go left to right well and make a save. Most Right handed goalies struggle moving toward there blocker side, in addition to the fact that most goalies also favor their gloves, as apposed to their blocker.

most the time i am playin against new goalie because i mostly play tournaments but, the goalies blocker drops when he poke checks and the second i see him goin for it i just chip the puck up over his shoulder blocker side because im already on my foerhand. The 5hole slide or more a redirect between his legs, i never go fully to my backhand with it. I stop it and basically poke it 5 hole before it gets all the way over to mybackhand if that makes any sense. Kinda hard to explain in text. What really happened was that i had to come up with something new because the local goalies that I do see all the time knew i like to shoot high blocker or deke and shelf it backhand glove side. The 5 hole slide was the perfect solution because the goalie has to open up if he wants to get to either post to stop my other original favorite moves. Te good thing is they all look exactly the same on the approach so the goalie doesnt know which its gonna be till its usually too late. Now, that being said, i score on almost every breakaway i ever take. Put me on the doorstep with a tap-in...you're better off with a c-leaguer.

My advice to the kids, carry on your forehand in a shooting positition, drop the shoulder for a second like youre going to deke and just shoot near side. Goalies expect a deke out of kids for sure.

my advise, is tell your son to have fun and to try anything he wants, pressure will come later. Right now is time for him to build his confidence. A shoot out is where he can experiment wrist shot, deke, back hand, slap shot, the jager, my little thing i like to do is open the blade up it makes the goalie set in that position for at least a second. let him do his own thing I would say on this one is every one has to find there own shooting style, because no one really can or will listen to where he is told to shoot.

Puck is held in a shooting position on his left side (I'm sure he's looking blocker-side) then with his sick hands he pulls it to his right. Goalie looks stupid.

Always fake a shot if you are gonna deke, i do what Ovechkin does with the leg pump, i have no clue what the leg pump does but i do it. Don't over deke.

love the datsyuk goal... favorite of all time. cant beleive he actually pulled that one off on a breakaway during a game.
