Pre-Season PIHA Tournaments

Hey Guys, I don't know if anyone has thought about this, but I understand how all of us are agreeing to go to each others tournaments, as in the you come to us we come to you type agreement. With the going rate being $400 a team, most organizations bringing 2 teams, I'm a little curious as to how we think this is fundraising? In reality we're just handing money back and forth and losing money on the Referees. I still think the tournaments and exhibition games are great, but I'm not seeing how this will drum up and money for one particular team unless they opt to back out of recipricating to the other teams that come to them. Ok, im done now, just thought I'd throw this out there.

Yes, that is a valid point and a good question that Im sure many have. Why is it a fundraiser, or how?

What is supposed to happen is each team that commits to the other, as you stated should recipricate with teams of their own, and yes this is merely an exchange of money between teams. That is where the team and its management needs to make it a fundraiser when they host by putting the word out that other teams are welcome. Emails, flyers at the home rink where its held, and a little time spent on the ol telephone. Each one of you Pro PIHA players has been around this sport at this high competition level somewhere and many of you played at National events, where you have met other players and have kept in contact. By getting in touch with these non-PIHA teams that would still be worthwhile competition, and getting their commitment to playing, you are making your fundraising profit in this manner.

Breakdown; Each Host team lets say gets....2 teams from their own organization? (Make it fun and enjoyable, give your minor guys a chance to play at a high level they might not later in the season have as many chances to get into by having eight players, four pro, four minor and a goalie compose the team) HINT: Your players could pay $50 each to play, keeping in mind that they will be attending two or three tourneys with that money. A small price to pay for good conditioning and getting ready preseason against top competition. HINT: Put this money asside to pay for your rink fees for the tournament you host.

Perhaps 2 or 3 other teams from PIHA agree to come support their brethern teams from the league. You now already have 4 or 5 teams and a guarantee to outside teams that this tourney will not be cancelled and will definitely be happening (a major selling point to drawing teams, no one likes to get into tourneys that get scrapped). HINT: Put this money asside somewhere safe for when you visit each team that paid you $400 as support in reciprication.

Now for each team you get extra, it becomes profit of $400 each. Taking care of officials fees and such (personally I could care if there are prizes for the winner when the Tics visit, not a concern for us), and hopefully a little left over for your team to use for whatever. The exchange of teams has to be mutual for any of these tourneys to work. But what you make is soley each teams responsibility and what they are willing to put into it.
But it can work well as a fundraiser.

Pre Season tournaments are a great idea for teams to use as fundraisers and also get their team in some pre-season action. It is also good to establish a relationship with all of the other league teams and rinks. It is very easy to "forget" about other teams tournaments, but not if they don't attend yours!

Just an idea.

i think what my man vapor 10 is trying to ask is this.... where is the money being made? as far as a fundrasier?

I can understand that question and I think the answer is much broader than what Vapor10 is thinking. This is a way to build fan interest and a fan base, also from a marketing point of view its a excellent idea. I am not sure which teams have hats or t-shirts for sale already but if each team brought some to each tourny they attended and sold them there is a way to make some money. Like when you go to a NHL game and they have both teams apparel for sale. Its a bigger picture than just trying to make money at these tournys and while that is the overall goal I think team owners would be much happier to see a positive return at the end of the season. If I was running a team out of a rink I owned I would get as many of my youth players to attend these tournys, at no charge, let them see what its all about and have the PIHA players run clinics to make money. Lets also be clear that if you are looking to get rich on PIHA its not going to happen, but if you want to break even on expenses its a real possibility.
