Piha Draft

I was just reading about the draft in PIHA. I am just curious of how these new people who are drafted will fit into an organization. According to the site the draft is held on Nov. 11th that is less then a month from game time. If your taking a person who will have to leave his hometown to go play hockey somewhere that doesn't leave much time to get to know your team and to practice and create team chemestry.

I'm also curious if teams will use there draft picks to have the player start out in minors and work their way up like the NHL does, or if your going to put that person on the pro team immediatly? Also are teams leaving roster spots open for players in the draft?

Defiantly not going to be playing pro. Since all of them will be born in 91 as it says on the site making them to young to play pro. But I thought someone said it was not a real draft and that they were not actually joining the team. Just recognizing the players as being good.

The draft is a way to get these kids involved in the league. They will be too young to play in the 2007 season and not bound to the team they have been selected by. The league would like to use it as a measuring stick for the kids coming up through the youth systems, to create some buzz and competetion to be selected higher in the draft and eventually interested in the league itself.

Adding to the Growl's post, this is a great way for a young talented player to get his name on the board and get noticed in the PIHA. There is so much talent that goes unseen or underdeveloped. PIHA teams will look to this draft and future drafts for players that could be of a benefit to their team. It's an awesome opportunity that many of us older players wish we could of had, now Charley is making that happen for the next generation. Good work Charley, always looking ahead.

ok gotcha that sounds like a good idea. I think that if it goes well enough do you think that these young players could form another league with all of them playing against one another and to keep up their skill outside of yearly tournaments? Kinda like Juniors for hockey only for roller hockey

Interesting thought, I would say they would be playing minors in PIHA and developing through that level.

Hey Garret, how does the Richmond team look this year?

We have 6 returning players including myself so we will deffenatly be a very fast team. I just hope we can get team chemestry quicker this year then we did last year. We do have a lot of people sapposedly comming to the tryouts that are happening today so we will see then. But we should give every team a good run for their money. Should be a great season this year Can't wait for it to start.

Other then myself no. I have to see if I can get Ian to come out but thats kinda a long drive for him. Also I'm going to see if I can get Pat Morgan but he to lives kinda far and would be tough for him to make the trips.

Wish we did have the old Warriors back that was a great team to be on and I think we would do really well in Piha.

Garret: I think the old Warriors would get killed in PIHA personally. To me that was a 'grind' team if roller has such thing. The Warriors were very much about body contact taking a step away from the other guy, not about speed and agility. Not saying that the game plan was to go out and hit all the time. More just that against us you always had somebody on you. And I don't mean skating with you, I mean leaning on you. I'm pretty sure I saw Doell skate through more people when he had the puck than most Dmen ever hit in a game.

Probably the only line we had that could have held up in PIHA would have been the black line (I Ward, C Harrell, B Chilcote, S Herald). They had the speed, skills, and most importantly, the brains to run with just about anybody. You could swap Morgan (today) in for Herald and that line would likely improve.

I'd love to see Morgan in PIHA, but I think he likes contact better. He, like Ed Smith (MLRH Glads), seems to get better the rougher the game gets. Funny since he is all of 140 lbs soaking wet!

Thanks for the info...Yes those were some battles we had and on boths sides DC and WBurg.....I would have to agree with you to say I think we were both very physical teams and some of those guys would have a tough time...I don't think I will ever be a good tournament style player, But I think Ian and Harold would be fine.

Ben, i agree with you. I wont take anything away from the Warriors but they were better fitted as a Devils style play which required contact, and alot of it which is why they were so good. They knew how to hit and use it to their advantage. Not to sure how they would fare in todays PIHA though.

the draft is retarted, why draft a 91, who wouldnt be eligible to even play.

if you can't understand everything that was just posted above you, then i think you must be retarded... it's a way to build interest in the league, which is the only way the league is going to grow... how many kids drafted in the nhl go right into the league? 1 or 2 a year max... sometimes none at all... it really doesn't matter if they can play right away or not, and they would be eligible to play in the minor league... and besides, i've talked to our west coast scouting director and our canadian scouting director, and they are very excited to put their hard work to good use... just because you don't like an idea or don't understand its purpose doesn't make it "retarded"
