What inline hockey is up against.

    What we are up against?

We have all read the threads/posts about how it would be great to have our sport televised. Even if it were just the championship games at Narch? Or the NCRHA? Something to get our sport back on the map. I have commented several time, as have other people, that ESPN could easily move the 37th daily airing of Sportscenter to another time slot one week to show a big roller hockey game. Or they could air the game at 3am and all the people with Tivo could just record it?etc?rant?rant?rant?.

Well, this weekend I about puked. We can?t get our sport on tv, even at the highest levels?because of this?

US Rock, Paper, Scissors Championship and the World Series of Darts.

I thought that the Spelling B was bad.

I think I am going to hang myself.

Even if interest wanes after a while, people watch shows they can relate to.

Poker and darts don't get high ratings because they're inherently exciting - they get high ratings because people:

    a) Have played the games before
    b) Can see themselves in the shoes of the competitors

If ESPN doesn't get high enough ratings from the NHL to keep them on board, what shot do you think a spinoff sport with no professional ranks has?

I see your point...and agree. But damn, I can "see myself" mowing the grass and taking the trash to the curb. That doesn't mean I want to watch it on ESPN.

"...taking the trash to the curb.."

    I like that one...

But, don't let the U.S. Trash-to-the-Curb Association (USTCA) hear about it...they are hoping for coverage of their nationals next month on ESPN2...

ODDLY ENOUGH I FOUND MYSELF TIVOing THE ROCK, PAPER, SCISSOR CHAMPIONSHIP. I WATCHED 4 MINUTES OF IT BEFORE I DELETED IT, BUT I STILL HAD A STRANGE INTEREST IN IT. HOWEVER I THINK MORE PEOPLE WOULD BE INTERSTED IN A INLINE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AT NARCH THAN THAT BUT IT WILL NEVER BE ON ESPN.

I agree that ESPN puts on some whacky stuff nowadays.......darts, poker, spelling B, paintball, obstacle courses etc etc. I just don't think anyone would watch inline hockey the way it is now. It is so close to ice hockey......and if they are going to show something SO similiar to ice hockey, why not just show ice hockey itself? I still feel that inline hockey needs to get back to it's differences from ice hockey.......playing outdoors with a ball etc etc. I think Pro Beach Hockey had the right idea.....but than again, what do I know since it's not around anymore.

From Nick Gismondi's blog on the NARCh web site:

In reply to:

The Division 1 Championship would see the Mission Militia and the Mission Snipers battle it out. The Snipers relied on the deliberate style of play and slowed the game down. The Militia had two choices here; force the play or lay back. They decided to lay back and play the Snipers style. This took away the game from the Militia. The frustration was evident on the bench. This game would head to overtime as well with the score tied at zero. The slow it down game continued for the Snipers. They took the one chance they had and buried it. Pat Cannone would be the hero of this game. Tonight the town will be painted Sniper black and yellow, lock up all the women!

I wasn't at the game, but I've been to plenty where I'd write the game up similarly - I'm sure many of you have, too. You tell me what has more action - darts or a finals game that ends 1-0 and probably had <10 shots on net between the two teams....

When I saw the commercial, I honestly thought it was just a spoof. But then they showed "highlights".

I don't know how the ratings would do on tv, but I play Pro roller hockey in PIHA and the finals of that were supposed to be on tv and they weren't, not to mention there were about 5 peopls in the stands. Narch Pro and Torhs Pro has the best players in the world, but lets face it, it is not fun to watch because the teams play so slow of a game in order to not make a mistake. The true roller hockey player and fan knows that in order to win those games, the play needs to be at a slow pace so there r no mistakes made. The Narch pro final almost put me to sleep until the last two minutes and overtime, and people watching the game with me felt the same way. Someone that doesn't watch roller hockey often would turn that game off in 5 minutes especially when there are almost no shots on goal in the first period. I love roller hockey and will play till I can't skate anymore, but I don't think it will ever be on tv, as much as I and every true player and fan would want it to be, it probably will never happen.
