    Old School Roller Hockey

    Hey Folks,

Here's the official Web site for the 2005 Roller-Hockey World Championship:

    <A HREF="http://www.2005rhwc.com/about.htm" target="_new">http://www.2005rhwc.com/about.htm</A>

This is the form of the sport that is very popular in Europe, and is played on quad skates. Interesting stuff, but not my cup of tea....

Richard, I prefer inline over that. I have never been able to skate on quads. It looks like it would be fun to watch.

    Hi John,

I'm with you. I'm so old that the last quad skates I wore had METAL wheels...

I recently played a game against a hardball team with my inline team. We played without upper body protection (helm, elbow, shoulder) and with a ball that was a bit lighter then harball and heavier then skaterhockey. They are not that much quicker anymore and also with breaking they don't have much advantage. We could nicely pokecheck all their attackers (they have much shorter sticks), but they can handle like freaking idiots. They take the ball on their backhand, handle with one hand aroundyou, and shoot with their backhand faster then with their forehand. Real crazy but it was a fun match. They won 18 to 14 I think.

    Hi nummer55,

Don't get me wrong; I'm not denigrating the skills of the people who play hardball hockey. They definitely have talent.

Sounds like you had a great experience!

    Re: Old School Roller Hockey

I have always chartacterised "hardball" roller hockey, a.k.a. "short stick," or "ball and cane" hockey as closer to field hockey played on roller skates, whereas inline hockey is the game of ice hockey on roller skates.

I believe the characterisation is still valid...either form is a viable, legitimate game, and can be played at a high level.

My preference, obviously, is for the inline version of the game. I feel that inline hockey (or the Eurpoean "skater hockey") has the most opportunity for creative success, on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. This makes the game more fun than the other versions of the sport.

I agree, quad hockey is just getting too 'old'. Their equipment and style of playing didn't really develop in the past decades.

In The Netherlands (my country) lots of quad teams and rinks are now turned into skaterhockey. Though, I do believe the sport of quad hockey will remain, especially in Spain, Italy and Portugal where there are pro leagues. In these countries there is money involved, more then American pro roller hockey players could dream of...
