skate recommendations

Hi all. I'm a relatively new player....can skate decently and am looking to buy some skates. Can anyone recommend some skates that are mid-range....not the top of the line but will definitely last me awhile?

Also, someone told me to look for "rockered" skates....is that really something I should do? Thanks for your help.

another question....would anyone recommend starting off with a pair of ice boots (vapors or ccm tacks?) and buying a chassis and wheels? it seems like a lot of people on this board end up going that way after awhile anyway.

I have a pair of Mission D1's, the Mission Helium 950's, and then a pair of Graf G Series 735 from ice with a chassis on them. Graf are the best skate on the planet, bar none, end of story...but they are an ice boot. I pretty much exclusively use Mission for roller and absolutely love the feel and response of the skates.

I suggest going to your local sports store and trying on everything they have. Some people like Mission, some like Tour, some ice boots, etc, etc. At the end of the day everyone has a great product out, it just boils down to personal preference for your feet, style and abilities.

Don't go in with a price mind set. Sometimes you end up with something you really didn't feel comfortable in based on not wanting to spend the extra $100. Shop around, look for a deal...you'll find them. A pair of skates that fit right, and work for YOU is what you want. Mid range skates also tend to have less durability then upper end models. You end up buying two pairs of cheaper skates (and spending more in total)in the same time as one top end pair would probably have lasted.

Weigh out all the options and look a little more long term if you plan on continuing to play way down the road.

Shoot, score, then celebrate...followed by an appology for the pass you didn't make.

I'm a Mission man myself, but try on skates at your local shops to figure out which ones suit you best. Whatever route you decide to go(inline skates or ice boot & chasis), check out hockeymonkey.com or hockeygiant.com for the best prices and variety to choose from.

I would absolutely NOT reccomend any of the newer "helium" type Mission skates. The durability is terrible, and while they are extremely comfortable, the boot has begun to break down on mine already and I have skated it less than 10 times in all. If you want to get in and stay in the sport, do NOT get missions, you'll have to buy new skates in less than a year. Consider that if you buy missions, you're essentially buying 2 pairs of skates, because you'll have the first pair warrantied and the second pair is not warrantied.

Have you looked at the skates on www.hockeygiant.com they have a lot of good deals. There is a sizing chart there also for you to see what size is recommended per your shoe size. I recommend the hockey giant brand which is Gear .

Every company makes their skates a little different. Bauer Skates tend to be fairly narrow, CCM are generally wide...Tour skates tend to be Wider then Missions...So try everything on and don't buy anything with having it on for at least 10 minutes or so and stand up for that time. Don't let anyone in a store pressure you into buying something you aren't sure about...and if they don't want you to try everything on then go somewhere else.

I am a huge fan of Nike. They are the most comfortable skates I have ever worn and the most responsive. I use HiHo silvers, they are expensive but I also have a pair of roller daddys that I use for outside. The rollerdaddys have been on sale for awhile now on giant or monkey, they are very similar and the daddys are about 200 now. I had a problem with my first pair of hiho, last year, and the company apoligized and told me to send in the skates and they would replace them completely. They sent me the 05 model hiho before they were even out for sale.
