Mission 750's... switching wheels

I've been out of hockey for about 5 years so please excuse my ignorance. I just purchased some Mission 750 skates and replaced the Factory Z-Rated wheels with some Hyper Forumla G wheels. The problem is, if I tighten the bolts all the way on the wheels they will almost not spin. If I give them a hard spin they may spin 1/16" of a turn. I had to fine the right "tight spot" in order to keep the wheel from moving around but also allow it to spin freely.

My question is, is this normal? Or do I need to get a new spacer or something?

Not necessarily....what often happens is that the shoulder inside the wheel hub is too wide....this happens with unfortunate regularity with many manufacturers....When this is true, the spacer becomes too "short", and thus when you tighten the bearings, the center race is pulled inwards causing the bearings to bind up, before the frame of the chassis, the inner race of the bearings, and the spacer have become a "solid" piece for the bearings to spin freely around.

Usually this is only a few thousands, but still a problem....

Sometimes some new wheel manufacturers use a different axle/bearing system which can cause problems, like switching from mini bearings to regular 608's. If you use the same spacer you will have problems, because the spacers for mini bearings are shorter than standard bearings due to the fact that mini bearings are slightly wider.

When you change from mini's to standard bearings you must always change the spacers.

Thank you for the quick reply. So you're saying I may have a bad batch of wheels then from Hyper? My bearings are Mission 608 Abec 9's so those can't be the problem. 2 out of the 8 wheels I have spin freely when everything is tightened down.

Should I just return my wheels and try some new ones? Or is it ok to not fully tighten everything and leave it just tight enough to keep the wheel from wobbeling?

Well then it may be the wheels it happens often enough....Did you try "popping" the wheels after you tightened them? That is done by pushing them back and forth until they click....once they click, they may spin freely. It may take a lot of force to do so.

Make sure nothing(dirt/grease) is "built up" inside the wheel hubs too...where that little step is...that's the "wheel hub flange", against which the outerbearing sits. Make sure there is no little plastic ridge in the corner where the outer bore of the wheel hub joins the wheel hub flange(the narrower bore inside the wheel). Sometimes there will be a small ridge of plastic from the pour which you can scrape out with a sharp knife.

Sometimes the manufacturers try to make that inner hub flange exactly the same width as the spacer: .400", and if they end up with .401" you will have this problem. Many try to make it .396" - .400" so there is never any interference

Running your wheels loose usually leads to losing an axle and a wheel, or plural, during a game, when you are caught on the bench with no tool to tighten them.

After reading everything you've said I'm leaning towards a bad batch of wheels. Some wheels are turning like the stock ones did, but there are a few that give me resistance. I pulled the ones that gave me resistance and put the stock ones back in those spots and they spun fine.

I did try "popping" the wheels after I tightened them but that didn't do anything.

I also saw no small ridge of plastic in my bearing.

I think what I'll do is just put the Hyper wheels back on and then go back to the store I bought the blades from and see if I can swap out the wheels that aren't working for some new ones. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.
