Team Alberta Named for 2004 USA Hockey InLine National Junior Festival
For Immediate Release
RED DEER ? Hockey Alberta Inline has named its 14 player roster for the 2004 USA Hockey In Line (USAHIL) National Junior Festival tournament. This year?s event is being held in Corona, California, June 24-27.
Team Alberta will be competing against four regional all-star teams from the United States (Team West, Team South, Team East and Team Midwest/Central). Attending this year?s event for the third time, Team Alberta is the only Canadian team to be invited and is often viewed as ?Team Canada?.
?We were overwhelmed by the amount of skilled players that attended the selection camp this past weekend. It was no easy task selecting the team. The players gave it their all which made our decisions that much more difficult,? stated assistant coach, Scott Botterill.
The selection camp for the 2004 Team Alberta program took place May 14-16 at the Collicutt Centre in Red Deer. It was an ?open? tryout for all players living in the province of Alberta born in the years 1985 to 1988. With 43 athletes from across the province in attendance, this year?s selection camp was the largest in the program history.
The tournament format consists of round-robin play followed by the top two finishers competing in the championship gold medal game. The third and fourth place finishers after the round-robin games play for the bronze medal in the consolation game. Team Alberta was edged out of the medal round by a one goal loss in the final round robin game at the 2003 event.
?It?s our goal to build a team that can match the Americans foot speed and wheel control. That?s not easy considering the majority of our competition is on their wheels 12 months a year. If we can equal their skating we?re confident our team play will give us the upper hand,? commented head coach, Shane Hastings.
