Team Alberta Selection Camp Notice
Team Alberta Selection Camp for 2004 USA Hockey InLine National Junior Festival Tournament Announced
The year 2004 will mark the third time that Hockey Alberta In Line (HAIL) has sent a team to the prestigious USA Hockey InLine (USAHIL) National Junior Festival tournament. This year?s event is being held in Corona, California, June 24-27.
Team Alberta will be competing against four regional elite level teams from the United States (Team West, Team South, Team East and Team Midwest/Central). Because Team Alberta is the only Canadian team to be invited to the tournament thus far, they are often times viewed as ?Team Canada?.
Each of the USAHIL teams will be chosen from four separate tryout camps that are limited to 112 players each (96 skaters and 16 goaltenders). The 2004 USAHIL tryout camps will be taking place in April and May at El Segundo, California, Alpharetta, Georgia, Voorhees, New Jersey, and Ballwin, Missouri. In 2003, 40 states represented by the over 400 players attending these tryout camps.
The tournament format consists of round-robin play (i.e., each team will play each other once) followed by the top two finishers competing in the championship gold medal game. The third and fourth place finishers after the round-robin games play for the bronze medal in the consolation game.
For a recap of the 2003 event which was also held in Corona, California, visit Inline Hockey Central (http://www.inlinehockeycentral.com/a...il062303.shtml) and the websites of HAIL (http://www.hockeyalberta.ca - to find the Team Alberta Program information go to Development and then In Line Hockey) and the National Inline Hockey Association-Canada (http://www.niha.ca/).
For the players chosen to play in the USAHIL National Junior Festival, the tournament offers the chance for them to showcase their skills on a national stage. This exposure opens up other opportunities. For example, a minimum of four USAHIL players from the Festival will be selected to try out for the U.S. National Mens Team competing in the 2004 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) In-Line Hockey World Championships being held in Germany, July 10-17. USAHIL will also be awarding two $500 college scholarships.
At the past events, representatives from several U.S., college and university club teams have attended the Festival in an effort to educate players about the opportunities to continue playing inline hockey while attending college or university.
The selection camp for the 2004 Team Alberta program will take place May 14-16 at the Collicutt Centre in Red Deer. This is an ?open? tryout for all players, regardless of their local affiliation, living in the province of Alberta born in the years 1985 to 1988.
At the camp, each player will have five ?high-paced? floor times to showcase their talents in vying for one of the 14 spots (i.e., 12 skaters and 2 goaltenders) on Team Alberta. This will consist of two 1-hour instructional drill sessions and three controlled scrimmage games one hour in length. It?s anticipated that the Team Alberta Selection Camp will in itself generate a tournament-like atmosphere.
All eligible inline hockey players in Alberta will not want to miss the chance to play with the top inline hockey players in the province. The Selection Camp itself promises to be a very challenging and rewarding experience.
HAIL, like USAHIL ?s view of its regional tryout camps, considers the annual Team Alberta Selection Camp process to be an integral part of developing high performance inline hockey players. Thus, not making the team shouldn?t be viewed as a ?failure? but rather as player development on a continuing basis.
The Team Alberta Selection Camp and in turn the USAHIL National Junior Festival will challenge young Albertans to raise their level of play. Every player attending the Selection Camp will have contributed in some way to Team Alberta?s success in the 2004 Festival.
A Team Alberta Selection Camp registration form is available for downloading off the Hockey Alberta website (see above). The registration deadline is Tuesday, May 11.
