Broomall, Pa.--C. J. Yoder scored two of his three goals in a six-goal second quarter as the Marple Gladiators downed the Hartford Thunder 9-3 in the first game of the MLRH Championship Series in front of a large crowd at Marple Sports Arena.
The teams battled through a slow-paced first quarter as the Thunder outshot the Gladiators 18-12 and missed on two early power play chances. The Thunder, who came into the game with a 38.1% on the power play, couldn't convert when Ed Smith was called for hooking 49 seconds into the match.
Brian Yingling (two goals, assist) notched the game's first goal at the 2:54 mark of the second quarter. Three-and-a-half minutes later, it was 3-0 before the Thunder's Sean Connelly answered back. Yingling then started another three goal rally for the Gladiators to make it 6-1 Marple before the half.
Th teams traded goals in the third with Marple taking a 2-1 advantage in the fourth to cruise to the victory.
Game notes: Ed Smith (two assists) was voted the game's number three start, Yingling earned the second star while Yoder was named number one star...Marple's starting line-up scored six of the team's nine goals while Hartford's starting-four counted for two of their three goals...Hartford went 0-for-4 on the power play including missing on three first-period chances...Marple went 0-for-2 with the man advantage...Ed Smith was in the box three times for the Gladiators and leads the team in time in the sin-bin with 10 1/2 minutes in the playoffs. No other Marple player has been whistled more than twice in the post-season...Anthony Giusto's two minor penalties gave him 16 1/2 for the playoffs, leading all players on the rink. Giusto was whistled twice for roughing in the game...Eric Weischelbaumer of Hartford has as many goals and penalty minutes with nine.
