Most of my friends and I play roller hockey for the shear love of the game. We used to hope and dream of one day winning the NARCh National Championship, the TORHS Nationals, or even maybe just our house-league championship. None of us really thought that it meant much more to anyone else outside of our team and immediate group of friends. ... [More Info]

Memphis here we come!

Yes it is that time of year. We are only a couple of days away from our first state tryout of 2008, being held in Memphis, Tennessee at the Cordova Skating Center. After that, the United States Roller Hockey Commission will be on the road, traveling to three major states the following weekend: California, North Carolina, and Colorado.

If you have yet to register for your state tryout do so now as you are running out of time. We do not have an official deadline for any state tryout, but at anytime we may close out a division and not allow anymore registrations. Also, this year each player will be receiving a State Wars practice jersey at tryouts, this way ALL players will look identical out on the floor. If you register at the last minute, chances are you will not get the size jersey you request, but only what is left over.

Important Info You May Not Know
We have been receiving numerous emails with questions that are available on our website, below are links to most of this info. Check them out:

Where do I go to register for my state tryout?
http://www.statewarsrollerhockey.com/page.asp?id=12848

Where can I find host hotel information?
http://www.statewarsrollerhockey.com/page.asp?id=13901

What are the block dates for my specific division at State Wars?
http://www.statewarsrollerhockey.com/page.asp?id=13963

Where can I find most of the rules about State Wars?
http://www.statewarsrollerhockey.com/page.asp?id=12653

Where can I find the 2008 Sponsors?
http://www.statewarsrollerhockey.com/page.asp?id=12656

How many players are selected at tryouts?
In the AAA/AA Division a maximum of 8 skaters will be selected at tryouts.

In the A Division 8-10 skaters may be selected at tryouts.

In regards to goaltenders, 1-2 may be selected at tryouts. If one goaltender is head and shoulders better than the next, only 1 will be selected this year. If two goaltenders are of equal ability, than both may be selected.

Does it matter if I sign up for AAA/AA or A for tryouts?
At the tryout, if the USRHC staff feels that any player is trying out in the wrong skill level they will be moved to the place which best suits them. For instance, if a player is trying out for an "A" level team and is much too strong for the division, they will be moved into the AAA/AA tryout. If a player is too weak for AAA/AA they will be given the option to tryout for "A".

What is the rule for a player who wants to play but misses their tryout?
This is a question that has come up quite often and has a very specific answer. This year we have added a rule that would allow a maximum of 2 players to be added to a roster, but the following criteria must be met.

1. The player MUST be registered for the state tryout.

2. The player/parent must inform the State Wars office by email that the player in question will not be able to attend the tryout (give reason) and inform us of their intention to want to play for their state team.

3. After the selection process is completed and the head coach has been assigned, the head coach may request to our office that this player in question be added to the roster, as they will only improve the overall team.

4. One of the National Directors of State Wars Hockey would have to approve this player being added, if it is felt that indeed the team would benefit from adding this player to their roster. ... [More Info]

The National Inline Hockey Association (NIHA) – Canada is pleased to announce that the Manitoba Inline Hockey Association (MIHA), a provincial branch of NIHA – Canada, and Winnipeg Inline, a member organization of Roller Sport Manitoba, have agreed to an amalgamation for the good of the sport in the province of Manitoba, beginning with the current 2008 season.

NIHA – Canada President Kevin Sharp (Sherwood Park, Alberta) considers this agreement as “precedent setting and will help inline hockey in Manitoba to grow immensely.” NIHA – Canada Vice President Scott Hill (Langley, British Columbia) concurs, "This is tremendous step forward for inline hockey in Manitoba. Manitoba’s inline hockey leaders have shown great vision in sitting down and working together to further the game of inline hockey in their province."

MIHA, along with Hockey Alberta InLine, were responsible for forming the National Inline Hockey Association in late 2001, becoming the first two provincial branches of this new national governing body for inline hockey in Canada. MIHA President Neil Gobelle (Winnipeg, Manitoba) feels that this latest development is nothing but a positive step towards ensuring the long-term stability of inline hockey in Winnipeg and the province as a whole. Neil further points out that, “Inline hockey in Manitoba has forever changed as all inline players will now be members of one provincial sport organization.”

This merger is seen as the logical evolution of inline hockey in Manitoba. In the past, MIHA has concentrated largely on providing recreational league opportunities for youth players in Winnipeg and surrounding communities. Winnipeg Inline, on the other hand, has focused on an alternate youth league, the creation of a junior league, and elite or competitive rep teams.

Kyle Prystupa, the director of development for Roller Sport Manitoba (Winnipeg, Manitoba), has been a key figure in the unification process. As Kyle puts it, “Roller Sport Manitoba is extremely excited to be apart of NIHA - Canada and to have inline hockey unified in Manitoba. Over the last few years Roller Sport Manitoba has put forward various initiatives to help try and develop our sport. ...
The PIHA and Sin Bin Hockey are excited to announce a new sponsorship agreement for the 2007-2008 season. The Boston-based apparel company was founded in 2006 by Shane Bacchiocchi and focuses on the players who spend less time in the spotlight and more time in the corners.

“Sin Bin Hockey is not about rewarding a player who takes penalties, but as a way to recognize the player who is giving everything he has on every shift,” said Bacchiocchi. “It’s for the player that may not end up with four or five points in a game, but for the guy who comes out of every corner with the puck and who’s in front of the net protecting his goalie.”

Through the partnership of The PIHA and Sin Bin Hockey a new award has been created. The Grinder Award will be sponsored solely by Sin Bin Hockey, to be handed out on a monthly basis. ... [More Info]

To all players, coaches, and parents,

First off we want to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year. We are very excited to report that in the 4 years of our existence, State Wars Hockey has had the best opening day for tryout registration ever! We do believe that the word is finally getting out there what a great and fun experience State Wars truly is.

The purpose of this email is to clarify some of the new rules we have for 2008. Please read everything below and keep in mind that all of these new rules were put in place to make State Wars an even better event for all the players, coaches, and families!

How Does "AAA/AA" and "A" Tryouts Work Exactly?
For the first time, players will register for either a "AAA/AA" or "A" state tryout. In each State it is our goal to field a team in each of these skill levels, as we want all players of all levels to experience what representing your home state and feeling the pride in doing so is all about.

If a State can't field teams in both levels, then one team will be selected and placed in the skill level division that our staff evaluators (USRHC) deems appropriate.

If a player registers for the "A" Division tryout and during the course of the tryout the USRHC feels that this player is too advanced for the "A" Division, then this player will be automatically moved into the "AAA/AA" tryout. It is our priority to ensure that the skill level of the "A" Division is the same across the country and is fair for all teams and players.

If a player registers for the "AAA/AA" Division tryout and during the course of the tryout the USRHC feels that this player is well below all others attending the "AAA/AA" tryout, then this player (along with his parent/guardian) will be spoken to privately by our staff and asked if they would like to move into the "A" Division tryout.

Depending upon the skill level of a State, it is possible for a player to be too good to play in the "A" Division but may not make the top 8 in the "AAA/AA". That is why this is a TRYOUT. Unfortunately some players will not be selected. ...
