2002 BUFFALO WINGS CUP ROLLER HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

The 2002 Buffalo Wings Cup Roller Hockey Tournament is now in the books and the sixth annual event was a resounding success. This years event, which took place at the Dann Memorial Rink at the Nichols School this past weekend from August 16-18, saw 25 teams from all over the Northeast compete in 5 divisions for cash and prizes.
Teams from Boston (MA), Philadelphia (PA), Long Island, Binghamton, Rochester, Niagara Falls (Ont.), in addition to teams representing 5 Western New York area roller hockey rinks including 6 Buffalo Wings teams made the 2002 Buffalo Wings Cup the most diverse in it?s history.
The Buffalo Wings Cup has quickly become the ?Must Attend? event for teams looking to cap off their busy summer roller hockey season. As with past Buffalo Wings? Cup Tournaments, the 2002 version fielded a pro division with teams competed for a cash prize. This year four teams, the Niagara Panthers, the Mission Snipers, Inline Hockey America and the Buffalo Wings battled to see who would take home the $2000 cash prize.
The Pro Division Final saw the host team, the Buffalo Wings, take on a formidable Niagara Panthers team. The Panthers were able to secure the services of several veteran pro players such as Brett Hughes, Jay Allan, Ben Franks and Brent Leggett just to name a few. The Star-studded Panthers team cruised through tournament and found themselves $2000 richer.
The host organization, the Buffalo Wings, saw some limited success at this year event. The club fielded 6 teams in each of the 5 divisions. Although there was a Buffalo Wings team playing in the finals in 4 of the 5 divisions, only one home team, playing in the Adult-Gold Division, got to stand up on the first place podium.
Benny Gulakiw, the Buffalo Wings Vice President of Operations, comments on this years tournament, ?It?s our goal to have our teams win in every division. However, our disappointment is tempered by the fact that some very competitive teams decided to participate in our event this year and everyone, from the players to all the fans in attendance, seemed to have a really good time.?
