Actually Dave, the World Roller Hockey League was a product developed by PBH promoter Dave McLane back in 1992 - the league ran in 1993 in Orlando, Florida and was broadcasted on ESPN and a few other networks -- At the same time Alex Bellheumer was getting together with Jerry Diamond and Ralph Backstrom to form a tour to promote what became RHI in 1992 and the league ran first in 1994
Penalty shots were used for some penalties in the WRHL - the nets were also 7' feet wide (not 6!!) so It was already a problem for goalies
The free shot was adopted for Pro Beach Hockey to keep the flow of the game going quick like the tournament style - It was a shot taken from the top of the "two point arc" (about the distance of a 3 point basketball shot) - all of the players had to stand still on the arc until the player taking the shot had gained posession and then they could attack - some players picked up a ton of speed to get an advantage, and some players fired a shot - either way the puck is free to be played after the shot, making it somewhat exciting after tender made the save....players had to line up quick as teh clock didnt stop either
ALL of the rules in the PIHA were adopted along with MLRH and other leagues off of RHI and the international competitions - four, 12 minute quarters were used totaling 48 minutes of game play with only the halftime as a serious break and about a minute or so between the first two and last two quarters
My feeling at this point might be to do a different scoring system - perhaps by period and see who wins the battle at the end of maybe say 5 periods....That way we don;t get away from what the sport is and not taint anything....
