Hi Folks,
I was working for InLine Hockey News in Santa Monica in about 1995 or 1996 when I noticed boxer Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini hanging on the first floor while he waited for his child to finish up at "Dawn Barnes' Karate Kids."
I told Wade Contreras, IHC's associate editor at the time, that I'd like to meet Mancini, and when Ray came upstairs, Wade told me, "Hey, Rich, Ray
Boom Boom" Mancini is here to see you."
I said, "Send him in, Wade, I'll kick his ass."
I've always been a joker, and Ray laughed. I've always felt pretty good about that one-liner, but it wasn't until later that I understood the tragedy that Mr. Mancini had dealt with:
