Tough to judge defensemen with a wide brush.
Some guys are stay at home, some are more offensive. I think it is better to rate defensemen in categories.

It's probably not fair for me to comment because I've seen very few games involving teams from the Mason Dixon and Southeast divisions, but I think Tro has hit the nail on the head with this list.

I'd just like to add one name to this list...John Gambale of the Mass Bombers. This guy is as shut down as they get and he's just as good with the puck. He defeinitely deserves a mention along with the impressive list of D-men that have been recognized in this thread.

No mention of Daryl Interbartolo.....

Greg Thompson is at the top of my list too...

Welcome back to Joe Tamburino!!! one of the originals pros!!

I know he is from my team, and this is going to come off as completely biased but Kevin Hollenbush is one of the most outstanding all around defensemen that I have watched play PIHA over the years. I havent seen some on these lists, and Im sure they are every bit what people claim, but I do agreee with all the ones here I have seen. Especially Katinsky.

I have played against Ray a few times and when I have the puck coming towards him I tend to always keep my distance and look for the pass....I've never seen him get beat 1 on 1.

Jay Mazer is def up there too, can't let him get into empty space.

Keating would be my pick for best in the east, I can't remember seeing him get beat 1 on 1 in the past 3 or 4 years I've been playing against him. Always smart with the puck, he's fast and doesn't lack in scoring either.

One thing I realized from playing on a team with Keating is that although he is extremely quick and offensive minded most of the time, he doesn't hesitate to block shots or lay out to stop a pass on a 2 on 1, ect. He deserves to be ranked up there for his overall play. He is just as good as a defensive defenseman as he is an offensive one.

I think Matt McKeon is an under rated defensemen. Especially on a team with two or three of the top five defensemen in the league he might not be a stand out but he's been an important part of the Wolves tournament teams for years and was a top defensemen on the Grizzlies last year. Either way the Growl has to be one of the most defensively stacked teams in the league. Anyone ready to start taking shots at Daloisio's numbers? Maybe a little Brodeur effect? (joking)

I'm going to have to throw Eli Napolitano into the mix here. Usually you don't even notice him, but he's a solid grinder, great shot too. Anyone that has played with him or against him also knows how hard he is to get off that puck. Unfortunatley it doesn't seem as Eli will be playing this season.

My honorable mentions go to:
Matt Mckeon
J.D.
Felix Guzman (back this season, whata shot)

I know it might be biased because I have been watching him and playing with him for a couple of years now but Jeff Columbo is one of the best Offensive Defensemen I have watched. His slap shot is hard as hell and he loves to take the body on the 1-on-1's which is why I think he is a great Defensemen. Haven't seen many of the other top guys but def. agree with Jay Mazer being up there as well.

I dont mean to be rude here but there are alot of top talented Defensemen. I liek the Way Ray k plays for the Growl also Mike Keating. I really dont knwo much about the lond island guys. I know about Felix Guzman but you guys are all giving Tj Plaugher a bad wrap. the kid can play hockey he has grown up alot since 2005 remember 2005 Tj was the # 1 leading scorer in the league until the All star break. give the kid a Break guys. He has grown up and is more mature on the rink. He can block shots score and pass he has a cannon of a slap shot look out for him in piha his year. He might suprise some people.

I heard across the country he has recently been removed from another rink for fighting in a mens league...

I like the kid a lot, but he needs to get his head on straight, playing a whole season with one team would help, but you can only cry wolf so many times

Not making excuses for him, but going through life is a tough task for him right now too, not sure what else, but we'll see if he can pull it all together

TJ does have the talent, you can not doubt that, should he be rated along with the top guys in the league, maybe, but he needs to be more consistant all together period

If you were referring to my post, that wasn't supposed to be a dig on TJ. He's my boy. He sleeps on my couch whenever he comes to town. He can play on my team any time he wants... just not on defense lol

bauernike89 or Nick

No one gave TJ a "bad wrap" he earned that on his own. And no one said he couldn't play or wasn't a good player, that was never the issue.

And I know there are alot of people who don't like me, big deal. This isn't high school I am not trying to win a popularity contest. I can't change the way people feel nor will I try to. But atleast people know who I am, I am not hidding behind a screenname calling people out.

TJ, now don't get a big head now or anything :D, but this whole article was suppose to be about the top 15 defense in the league, how it turned to the TJ Plaugher dog and pony show, who knows! But regardless, as a player who has played with TJ, seen him in his immature state, dealt with the B.S. and was even a skeptic of having him this season, I can say with confidence that Plaugher has pulled a total 180 and has grown up. He's a much more team oriented player now and has proven that to everyone on the Stampede. So, enough with Plaugher, it's not the same kid you all love to hate, he's a totaly different player now, even though he punched me in practice on Sunday :cool:haha
