Just curious what everyones thoughts are about this team? It seems they are having a pretty decent season and the IRC has them ranked at #3. I know that they won the SCHL, but how do you think they will manage at nationals?

Havent seen them play. However the SCHL seems to struggle at the national level. They may have a hard time, but then again, the might not.

I dunno, never had the luxury of seeing them play. We played a texas team at the nationals in Colorado, we beat them easily but maybe this team will be different.

If they hold to the southwest tradition, I bet they go 2-1 in round robin, and then lose their first or second game in the elimination tourney. As said before me, the region has a solid base, but they usually struggle against the best from the rest of the country.

I have seen these guys play many times this season and I think this is the best team to come out of SCHL in some time. I may be somewhat predjudiced since they are at my rink twice a week for practice, but I really hope that they do well at Nats. Plus, UNT B qualified as well. The Mean Green are on a roll.

My only information about these guys that would give them any reason for being in the position they are in this season is their coaching. From what I heard down at the old rumor mill last year was that Mike Mackert former MCRHL old timer (sorry Mac, but you were like 30 dude...just playin') took the reigns coaching down their as he finished up his schooling. He was a legend in his time with the MCRHL and he may have passed a few trade secrets along to the UNT boy. I would expect the team to be a puck control and disciplined team. As for my guess from past experience with Texas teams I wouldn't expect the most talented bunch, but I wouldn't take them lightly they will play a solid systems game, which could be enough to make some noise....Should be interesting!

Not many people here have seen the Texas teams, so it's hard to judge.

Atleast with UT-Dallas you can draw comparisions to last years team.

UT Dallas is always good.

In '04 it took a last-second goal in the quarterfinals to knock them out (Dory Williams from James Wetton).

Then in the '05 quarters they ran into the best DII team ever (Nevada, with their current top four plus Steve Van Ness, who's probably the best NCRHA DII player ever -- he was pretty much unstoppable).

Last year they got to the quarters against Nevada, who had to play one of their better games to win.

(This year they're in a pool with Nevada.)

There's all sorts of video on the SCHL site if you join the "Fan Zone" thing. Including the all-star game, during which some UTD guys score a goal and do a celebration called "the keg stand." It's pretty funny.

I'd be willing to bet the go 0-3 in pool play. Win their first playoff game and then lose the next one. Basically I don't expect much out of them until they prove they can hang at the national level.

That's a tough pool - two final four teams and an elite eight team from last year.

If Mike Mackert is the former captain for the Michigan State team a few years back he is coaching the state of Texas, however not at the University of North Texas. If this is the same Mackert that you speak of he is coaching with the UT Longhorns who lost to the UNT in two games of the championship round of the SCHL playoffs. The actual coach for UNT is Martin Gwozdz...maybe some people have heard of him, maybe not. We'll just find out.
