The fifth installment of the Collegiate Roller Hockey League (CRHL) Competitive 2003 National Championships Tournament (NCT) is complete. Forty-seven teams made the trip to Feasterville, Pa. for this year's NCT, but only three could claim division titles. Coaching and Officiating
17. Why Should You Attend A USA Hockey InLine Coaching Clinic?
Still have questions about why you should attend a USA Hockey InLine Coaching Clinic? We recently asked Richard Tanzella of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii about his USA Hockey InLine coaching clinic experience:
Current League: West Hawaii Hockey
Team currently coaching: Red Rangers (youth)
Years involved with hockey: 20, off and on.
What level clinic did you attend? Level 1
Clinic Instructor: Tom Brower, Pacific Zone Coach-in-Chief
What were some of the beneficial topics discussed and emphasized at the clinic? Coaching skills, handling players, parents, officials and league officials.
What did you learn most? Experience is not the most important thing in coaching hockey - it is a multitude of things that make a good coach.
Now that you have attended a coaching clinic, what changes will you make to your coaching skills? I will incorporate new ways of handling players and parents, which I did not have prior to the clinic.
Would you recommend a coaching clinic to other coaches? Absolutely! The league should make the offer prior to the beginning of the season. Although I was able to institute some of the things learned, I wish I had the training before the season began so I could have implemented them from the beginning and set the tone for the season. I also think the USA Hockey InLine pamphlet "Keeping Inline Hockey Fun" should be given out in sufficient quantity at the beginning of the season so all players, parents, coaches, officials and administrators have a copy. Coaches should also have a team meeting with the parents at the very start of the season and review the pamphlet to get the season off on the right foot.
18. Referee Registration Reminder
Referee registrations for the 2002-03 season will expire May 31. In order to be eligible to officiate USA Hockey InLine-sanctioned games after June 1, referees must be registered for the 2003-04 season and have received their 30-day temporary referee certification and test. Once you have passed the test, the permanent card and crest will be mailed to you. In order to officiate USA Hockey InLine-sanctioned games, all referees must pass the open-book exam with a score of 35 out of 50 correct (70%) or better. Referees who are not eligible place themselves and the league in jeopardy. Please take time today to register and take your exam. Registration forms may be downloaded at www.usahockeyinline.com, or by contacting the national office at (800) 888-INLN.
19. 2003-04 Officiating Clinic Program
Referees who wish to be certified at the Level 1 or new Level 2 classifications will need to attend a USA Hockey InLine Officiating Clinic. Many Level 1 clinics have been scheduled. A complete listing can be found at www.usahockeyinline.com.
The Level 2 clinic schedule is being finalized and will be available after June 15. For more information on the USA Hockey InLine Level 1 and Level 2 clinic programs, please visit the USA Hockey InLine Web site or contact Rob Coggin, Coordinator, Officiating Education Program at (800) 888-INLN ext. 119 or by e-mail, [email protected]
