I'm just wondering, what's the best hockey movie?

- Mighty Ducks 1, 2, or 3
- Mystery Alaska
- Slapshot!
- Cutting Edge (Yikes! Is this still even considered a hockey movie?)

another one of my soapboxes, sorry...

They haven't made a good hockey movie, yet, let alone a 'best' one. While all the aforementioned are each entertaining within in its own sub-culture-genre...every one of 'em has some stupid plot element that makes the whole thing stupid.

I really wish they could make a good hockey movie, one that even came close to the true feelings we all get from playing this game...

Good luck thinking Hollywood will ever come close...

I think all it takes is to have someone whose life has revolved around hockey to write a good book or have someone write him a book with life changing plots and inspirational moments with some Anime or Matrix style action-scenes. =) Adding some aliens, vampires, conspiracy theories wouldn't hurt, NOT.

Imagine an actual, real, legitimate inline hockey "reality series" on television. First, you get enough real, actual players, including even some who can act. Then you make you eight teams. Then you make up some (fictional) tournament story thread that has these eight teams competing in some tournament. From there, you play a single elimination tournament, taping the actual games. Interspersed with the real-hockey-being-played scenes, you can put the off-rink, plot and story lines and scenes. Each week, you highlight some comparison/contrast between the players of the two teams, and their fictional families, lives, relationships, whatever...

Legitimate fiction, but played out live, in real hockey games (No PBH-like game effects!!! Real inline hockey!)

The teams that win, get their characters carried forward into the next 'round' of the tournament. The drama of the fiction follows the reality.

That would be worth watching...

How can you forget (well maybe because they are forgettable):
-Youngblood
-Miracle on Ice (with Karl Malden)
-Rocket Dreams (has anyone actually seen this one?)
Still the alltime best sport movies were (and I hope no one says Rockey I-XX):
-Hoosiers
-Rudy
-The Natural
-Eight Men Out
We need a roller hockey movie of that caliber

Heck, I'd settle for a Field of Dreams, or a Bull Durham, something that had something to say about the game, with respect and belief attached...

I thought the MLRH playoffs a/k/a saga, supplied all the drama you requested (and some good hockey too). Now to get it on TV even if it is on ESPN 36 at 2:00A.M. instead of the Australian lumbar jack showdown.

yeah those are some good flicks, i loved slapshot...cuz lord knows narch is gonna be in Florida this year, and from the movie, we all know whats in florida.....yup yup yup...but my other favorite movie that i havent seen since i was just a wee little tyke was the hockey movie with youngblood in it...im almost positive that its titled "youngblood," but i could be wrong. it was a dope A** movie with the heart and soul that only a few select teams these days portray...a classic, i think so.

Youngblood hands down! Actually there's a little bias in there but I won't go into it. Slapshot would have to be my favorite but Mystery Alaska, while far-fetched, did have some good parts to it, and was a good movie. I thought the 'I won't die' scene between the 2nd and 3rd periods in the locker room had a hockey mentality to it.

Slapshot was hillarious, I love that movie. I have to say that all three Ducks movies kind of give hockey outsiders a bad impression. "Knucklepuck!"

hahahaha,

and the worst thing about it is that the wings are gonna loose in the first round. so much for buying a team eh? it just goes to show that the greatest team of all time, cant burry the bisquit....i guess all the wings are gonna be sleepin on the couch after the thumpin given by the Ducks....quack....quack.....quack....quack....ohh and the only reason why i want the ducks to win, is a free night of drinking on my buddies....whoopie!

Hi Bonesy,

Actually, I think what's happened is that the Red Wings have come up against a mighty (pun intended) hot goalie, along with a good defensive team. I work with a buddy who hates the Ducks more than I do (I'm a big Kings' fan), and he can't stand it. lol. I'm cheering for the underdog in almost every series right now... though I'm cheering for Ottawa because I want to see Canadian teams go as far as they can. Shake it up, baby!

Starring: Rita Hayworth

Story: Tom Ferguson (Ward Bond), star left wing of the Indians hockey team, is killed during a game in an "accident" with **** Adams (Paul Fix) and Bill Drake (Max Hoffman, Jr.), two of his own teammates. His brother, Alec Ferguson (Charles Quigley), is not convinced it was and accident, and goes to New York to uncover the truth. Posing as a fellow townsman named Steve Moreau (Clyde Dilson) who is unable to accept an offer to play with the Indians because of an injury, Alec wins a place with the team. He learns that the team, a member of a nation-wide professional league, has been throwing games on the orders of a gambling ring. He meets Betty Holland (Rita Hayworth) the pretty daughter of team coach Joe Holland (J. Farrell MacDonald) and falls in love with her. He plays along with Adams and Drake and learns that the owner, Rudy Maxwell (Arthur Loft), is the head of the gambling ring and has Coach Holland under control because of bad checks written to pay off gambling losses. Reporter Sam Erskine (John Gallaudet) suspecting that the games are being thrown and talks Betty into accepting a job on the Chronicle to find out what she can to protect her father's name. Maxwell discovers Alec's true identity and orders Betty kidnapped, thus ensuring that Alec's play will lead to an Indians' defeat in an important game.

I told you it was easy! This one is a little harder. I'd say a medium.

Who was the first European-born player to win the Stanley Cup?

- john

MDE3
05-10-2003, 02:15 PM
Stan Mikita?

John_S_Osborne
05-10-2003, 03:34 PM
Actually, the first European ever to win it was with the Ottawa Senators in 1927. Alex Smith was from Bootle, England. Mikita was the first in the pre-expansion era of the NHL.

Ironically, the next European to win the Cup was much later... Esa Tikkanen, with the Oilers.
