View Full Version : Help with stuck axle/screws

I have a Bauer Vapor 1 here w/ a shifter chassis.
The problem is two of the axles were screwed so tight that when I tried removeing them the hex shape got destroyed.
How do you guys deal with this? What tools do I need?

Ok, I've been to DREMEL. Exaclty what kind of tool am I looking for? Or did you mean that I just drill the screw off?

I would just drill them out and replace them. just do it real carefully as not to strip or ruin the chassis
Dremel is a high speed tool(up to 18,000 rpm or so) which has a rotating head into which you can put all kinds of cutters for metal wood etc. A normal variable speed drill will work fine though - preferably with a variable speed drive so you dont spin too fast and lose your bore direction. If you dont have them - get a tungston carbide or other hard drill bit for metal cutting(those screws are supposed to be "hardened" so you cant strip them easily lol). Probably need about a 3/16" bit. Use some 3/1 oil or similar when cutting - it will cool the metal and make it cut better. Just make sure the bit diameter is a little bigger than the screw diameter. If you want to save the axle then drill a hole a little smaller than the screw about 1/4" deep and use an "easy out" to unscrew the rest of the stripped screw. The heat created from drilling should soften the compound which is making the screw stick in the axle.
