Hi SJ,

I would like to hear back from you regarding the e-mail I sent you about advertising on IHC. If I don't, I may consider changing IHC's current policy of allowing commercial posts on this board, to be fair to the companies that do support this site.

Sincerely,

Richard Graham

Richard,
I think you should really continue to bend over backwards and let companies like this use your board to reach thousands of potential customers without any real effort or expense. I mean, I know that personally, I would only buy products from a company that uses this medium to sell their products, but has no interest in the growth of the sport, or advancing the efforts of those who do. I mean why shouldn't these companies get to advertise for free and recruit workers at no cost at all? Isn't that really what's fair?

Gary

Hi,
As far as I know this site is a free site to post commercial advertisements...Then I receive an email saying they are considering banning commercial posts to this board if I dont pay for advertising with IHC...Well if you ask me that defeats the whole purpose of FREE enterprise and free message boards...If we had to pay to advertise here you wouldnt see any ads...So do as you may, but if you charge to advertise here I can tell you that you're hurting yourself as well as everyone else....

Hello,

>>As far as I know this site is a free site to post commercial advertisements...<<

That was my policy. I felt it would introduce IHC's readers to new products that they might not otherwise hear about, and thus be a service to those readers. It worked fairly well until people began to take advantage of it.

>>Then I receive an email saying they are considering banning commercial posts to this board if I dont pay for advertising with IHC.<<

"They" is me, and I did not e-mail you saying that, I posted a message on this board for all to read. The e-mail is an automatic service from the message board telling you that someone has replied to your post, and happens to have that reply inside the e-mail.

>>Well if you ask me that defeats the whole purpose of FREE enterprise and free message boards.<<

That is one of the funniest statements I've read in a long time. Thank you for giving me a good laugh at the beginning of the day. Should be a good weekend.

>>If we had to pay to advertise here you wouldn't see any ads.<<

Any of your company's ads, you mean. There are currently about 10 advertisers on site that pay to support IHC's vision. So, you are completely incorrect. These companies feel they receive value from their advertising or they wouldn't do it. Ask them.

>>So do as you may, but if you charge to advertise here I can tell you that you're hurting yourself as well as everyone else.<<

I respectfully disagree. You have convinced me that my policy has been generous but mistaken. From now on, commercial posts will be banned, and I will inform IHC's readers about new products and services when manufacturers and companies let me know about them.

Thank you for your wonderful understanding.

Sincerely,

Richard Graham

You have it all wrong. This is not a public web site. This is a privately owned site that Richard Graham operates for the benefit of the roller hockey community. Rich covers his cost to operate this site through user fees and commercial advertising. At any time that Rich feels like shutting down this site, or the message board or even this particular forum, he can. If he decides to do this, not only will you lose an avenue for free advertising, but those individuals who want to post classifieds or companies who want to advertise without taking advantage of the opportunity will lose, too. Like a previous post said, if this is the only way you can advertise, then your company has no credibility. Companies like yours are a dime a dozen and you need to do what's necessary to set your company apart from the others. Instead, you choose to alienate your company from a significant roller hockey community that frequents this site with your callousness. Now your repeated posts and abuse of this forum without purchasing advertising is having the opposite effect of what your originally intended. When readers of this site see how you're taking advantage of Richard and his generosity and with the multitude of companies out there to choose from to meet their equipment and uniform needs, your company now goes to the end of the line. NO SOUP FOR YOU! I would suggest that you purchase a banner ad on this site. Not only is it very inexpensive, but it's also very cost effective. I will put my money where my mouth is and purchase advertising as well. Until you do so, you should refrain from posting any further advertising on this forum or I will support Rich if he decides to ban you from posting. You're right, this IS a free country and Rich is free to do what he wants with his private web site and we are all free to NOT buy products from your company.

Hi,

I just think this whole thing is a big misunderstanding..I was unaware that this was a privately owned site...I have been a visitor to this site for 3 years now and I think its great! I use it to follow tournaments in my area for our teams to enter..I also like the league directory for info on other organizations similar to ours...I misconstrued the email that I received from the editor..I thought that it stated that I had to purchase advertising space if I wanted to post here...So relax everyone please!! Im not trying to be a bad guy here..so im sorry if I offended anyone...I just wanted to extend my apologize to the editor especially..And just to show my support I would like the editor to send me advertising rate information to help support this site...

Speaking purely on my own behalf, the IHC message board is a tremendous way for me(Club president at JMU) to seek information so I can support companies who support inline hockey. However, it frusterates me, when companies try and spread information about their products, in the pure pursuit of profit. What many companies fail to understand, is the growth of hockey directly translates to money in their pockets. Helping a guy like Richard who spends time and money to maintain this site, is a gesture of good will, not to mention a low cost way to generate interests in your product. I'm sorry SJ Enterprises took the brunt of this burden, but I have seen many posts by SJ on the board, yet I have never seen an advertisment. Other parties that I see alot include Flarrow Hockey, and a hand full of others.

Purchasing an inexpensive ad makes me want to purchase from a company, not because they produce the best product, but because it shows they care for a game.

Richard- what's the status with rink rat? Did they ever spring for an ad? They seem like a pretty good group of guys, I think they would be a great company to support the site.

Look, people do not want to hear about every jersey you get in. I think Rich made this for companies to announce sales or users to tell about good deals they have found. Its not fair to other companies who pay for advertising and your company does not pay but still gets advertising. Thats just my opinion though.

Rich, just out of curiosity can users, not companies, occasianly post about good deals they find, because I do that every once in awhile. Thanks

I am a little late on the posts, so dont worry about my earlier posts sjenterprise ;-) To keep this site up, which I think many of us appreciate, we got to support one another occasionaly.

you guys just need to give each other a big hug! Thats what I think. Just a question as to why when I post something about leagues and stuff I get no replies but when some guy tries to sell something there are a million replies?? Just a question??
I still like the site though

Hi SJ,

Honest mistakes are just that. Don't worry about it.

I will send you some advertising information, but at the same time, feel free to send me information on your products. When I feel something is newsworthy, I'll be more than happy to put it on the Home Page for free.

I do believe, however, that it is time for IHC to be more careful about protecting the interests of the advertisers that support the site. Their dollars keep IHC going, and they need to know how much their support is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Richard Graham

Hi Mission,

Yes, it is still perfectly appropriate for IHC's readers to let other readers know about good deals they've found. I'm not trying to squeeze a penny out of everyone that comes to this site, and I think those kinds of posts serve the sport. Keep it up.

It's the "you hit my goalie" syndrome :)), but Rich has a valid point in asking for support. He has spent a huge amount of time creating and maintaining this board for our amusement and edification - to ask someone to make a contribution to help maintain the board - instead of just using it as a freebee to support a commercial enterprise - is not at all unreasonable. So hence the reaction.

About the same reaction as whenever anyone posts about a "perceived cheap shot" in any other part of the sport.

I think SJ got the message and replied with enough of an appology to get the same recognition from the readers as anyone else has here after the "heat" has settled down. Shake hands and see you next game!

Hi Columbus,

I changed the wording of the board just the other day. For now, this is a dead issue. Thanks for your support.
Edited by RichardGraham on 03/23/03 03:04 PM.
