From American Hockey Magazine:

Gooding Living The Good Life

Actor Cuba Gooing, jr. doesn't have to go far to play hockey now that the people of Athletica helped him build a state-of-the-art inline rink in the backyard of his new home in the Los Angeles area.

Gooding, the star of such movies as "Jerry Maquire" and "Rat Race" was featured in he November issue of American Hockey Magazine as one of the growing number of celebrities who is playing hockey for fun and fitness.

The 75 x 37-foot riink was designed by Los Angeles architect David Applebaum and features the Border Patrol 4000 boads and tempered glass, complete with NHL team logos. The concrete slab was designed to stand up to the harsh California sun, and Gooding added insulation inside the boards to muffle the sound so as to not disturn his neighbors when the action got fast and furious.

It was kind of fun to watch, but shameful at the same time. It did kind of make a mockery out of inline hockey, come on the ramps behind the net. lol

I was hoping this thread would degenerate into babble about CRHL Premier division Nationals. Wasn't Cuba Gooding Jr.'s 3'rd cousin twice removed on LU's team?

Hi Mission,

I was no fan of the ramps (or the required V-Form skates), but I think that any time a celebrity gets excited about our sport, in whatever permutation, can only be a good thing. I think I missed the day that Gooding was at PBH, but I do remember seeing a movie in which he played a deep-sea diver (portraying the first black military diver, I believe), and I was impressed with his performance. Anything inline hockey is ALL GOOD! /wtimages/icons/cool.gif

Hi SoCal,

Where I live now, I can walk down to the site where the rink was placed, and not have to worry about parking. Why am I always two or three years behind the times? LOL

Hi Superstar,

I'd like to meet Cuba. I get the impression that he's a real person, despite his celebrity.

Hi Dukes,

No, that was Will Smith, and it was six degrees of separation, not three. LOL

Dont' forget, back in the day, Tony Danza was part owner of the Philadelphia Bulldogs. He actually wore a Bulldogs hat while he was on some talk show and talked about owning the team on national TV.

oh, very good!

I must admit, the quality of posting has gone decidedly downhill when it takes 12 responses for us to get around to the obligatory Lindenwood tangent and label.

To avoid this in the future, perhaps Richard should appoint someone as "Lindenwood Monitor," one whose sole job it is to bring every message thread over three responses into the Lindenwood family of reference.

I'd volunteer, but I'm too busy skating at my paid job for a living... /wtimages/icons/tongue.gif (I'm going for all the mileage I can on this one...)

And if anyone gets ahold of him let me know I want him to fly me out so I can play hockey with him!

Hi Columbus,

I live close to L.A., so I guess it's up to me. /wtimages/icons/smile.gif

However, here are some problems I foresee:

Some IHC readers would trash Cuba's choice of equipment: ("You're not using Rink Rat wheels? What's WRONG with you?!")... /wtimages/icons/shocked.gif

Some IHC readers would trash Cuba for being a celebrity. ("You didn't EARN this rink, you got it because you're popular. You didn't earn SQUAT!" Signed Chris G.)... /wtimages/icons/mad.gif

Some IHC readers would get a one-goal lead, then stack five players like cordwood in front of the net so the opposition could never score. Then it would sub players in and out to drink up all of Cuba's liquor cabinet. (LinDERwood)... /wtimages/icons/wink.gif

You get the picture. Could get really ugly. lol /wtimages/icons/cool.gif

Danny,

That was Omar Gooding that enrolled at Lindenwood. The only thing slower than this guys acting career, was the pace that the LU-MSU game was played at last weekend.

Richard that was great, By the way Cuba Gooding Jr , We have board banners for you to place around your rink, Also, we would like to submit a script to you and your production staff. Lets make a movie of the week, The basis of the movie can be about 8 friends who have more money then they know what to do with, They decide to get involved in sport in which none have ever played, And because of there massive wealth they all build inline rinks in their backyards which seats 1500 people. Now here's where it gets fun... The 8 people that will star in this after school special will be Cuba "he will be captain", James Garner, david schwimmer, Dr Dre, Arsenio Hall, Anthony Michael Hall, David Hasselhoff, and in net Lisa Rimini. Smokin....

The movie will follow these celebrities as they play there way to Narch summer nationals in florida.

Of course Rink Rat will sponsor them and they will be called the Celebrity Rink Rat's.

Anyone who wants to be an extra call call me direct......

Take care....

Hmm... with refrence to the "cleaning your wheels" thread. I mentioned using vodka... Cuba Gooding Jr. would be using Hangar 1, while the rest of us clean our wheels with some delicious Bowman's Vodka
