After attending the Ft. Wayne Midwest Regional this past weekend, I have
noticed some new changes and seen some interesting updates. First of all, many
teams have lost a few good men, and added a few new good men. This year is
probably one of the more competative years which hasnt been lopsided by Michigan
State University. The following are the new team rankings after the first
tournament. Again, for anyone who disagrees, please feel free to add questions,
or comments on the matter of team rankings. If you feel that youre team is a
phenominal team or if you want to highlight a game, please feel free to do so,
but until then here are the new rankings(old rankings are in parenthesis nest
to the teams weekend record or current record):
1. Eastern Michigan (4-0)(5)- Eastern Michigan looked great this weekend
skating hard to every puck and giving 110 percent. They showed
stamina and poise against up and coming teams like Illinois State, and
Rose Hulman, they will still continue to grow and get accustomed to
each other as the season progresses. In addition, EMU may be missing,
sniper-like skater Biff Griese this season, they showed no remorse, by
scoring 11 goals on division III runner-up, Elgin Community College.
It will be interesting to see in Ann Arbor who Eastern Michigan Plays
as they continue thier quest for the cup. Key performers include Bedner
and Hanna as they man handled the competition.
2. Michigan State University (4-0)(1)- The Spartans are again looking to
repeat as MCRHL Champions; however, thier work is definitely going to
be cut out for them. Even though they went 4-0 this weekend and had a
key performance by Mike Mackert, who had a hat trick and a few extra
points, will be exciting how he witnesses as a leader to the rest of
the young team. Although they do have some returning veterans, I
seriously dont know if they can keep the faith for the rest of the
season. However, since Dante Damiani was missing in action, if he
does in fact return and is actually going to play, he will also boost
thier teams chances and take off a smidgion of pressure of of Captain
Mike Mackert.
3. Purdue University (3-1)(2) The Boilermakers just like Elgin played
extremely impressive as well, with solid spankings over University
of Michigan and University of Illinois. They definitely dont have a
problem with finishing because they have several players who can burry
the puck at any given moment. The one downfall is that they had a
heartbreaker against MSU when they lost 2-1, however, i feel they will
be back for revenge shortly. Not to mention they had superior defense,
and excellent goal-tending with a plus minus ratio of +18 with 22 goals
for and 4 goals against. Amazing!
4. Elgin Community College (3-1)(5)- The red, white, and black Spartans,
who i believe picked up a new goalie, were very exposive this weekend.
Although they lost to Eastern Michigan by 5 goals, they did have thier
back up goalie in the pipes who in fact was a bit shaky. They moved
the puck like lightning and had key performances by Richard Cline, and
Tony Borrico, who had a hat trick against Ball State. Furthermore,
they had a huge defensive win against University of Michigan (2-1).
Whether or not it was just a fluke, we will have to see, but with
the upcoming touranment in Ann Arbor, we will just have to see if these
bad boys are for real.
5. University of Michigan (1-2-1)(5)- The mighty blue and gold came out
looking to terrorize the Fighting Illiani, and they did by controlling
the majority of the game and taking care of business for the slumping
U of I team by a score of 4-2. They had strong defense and key
performances by Wells and Aho, and that defense continued as they played
Elgin Community College later on that saturday night. Mistakenly
however, they came up just a tad bit short, in an end to end battling
showdown as they lost 2-1 in a last minute thriller. Furthermore,
they came up with a sluggish tie against Illinois State and again coming
up short with a whipping by #3 ranked Purdue University by the score of
6-2. They will definitely have to work on team work and leadership and
some finishing techniques as they out shot many of thier opponents.
6. Ohio State University (DID NOT ATTEND)(6) The Buckeyes unfortunantly
did not attend the mayhem in Ft. Wayne, for reasons, nobody knows, but
with the performance at last years CRHL Nationals, they will be exciting
to watch as they are one of the buffer-more physical teams in the
league. If they decide to play the body and can score some goals, they
will definitely give the likes of Purdue, MSU, and EMU a run for thier
money.
7. Illinois State University (0-3-1)(6)- The Redbirds who were one game over
.500 last season came away with a disappointing first weekend. Even
though they put up a fight with Elgin Community college, and were down
at one point late in the game by three goals, they did make a come back,
but just didnt have enough energy to handle the offensive powerhouse of
of the ECC Spartans. On the other hand, they did have a great goal-
tending performance against University of Michigan when they skated
to a 3-3 tie. Furthermore, they looked good against the likes of #1 and
#2 ranked EMU and MSU, but just didnt have the defense in front of stand
out goalie Harej. If they dont look to improve on thier defense, they
could find themselves at the bottom of the ladder.
8. University of Illinois (0-3-1)(7)- moving down a seed this weekend
with a disappointing performance was the sluggish Fighting Illiani.
Although they tied the highly improved Ball State, they had some great
defense by Kevin Hatcher like skills of Lance Hinkle. Although they lost
three games to the likes of highly ranked Michigan State, Purdue, and
University of Michigan, they can only be positive and look for
weaknesses and then improve on those mishaps. As time goes on, look for
the fighting illiani to get better with leadership.
9. Ball State University (1-2-1)(NOT RANKED)- Although Ball State was not
ranked in the pre-season, they definitely put on a magical performance.
Many people were questioning thier talent this year, and due to the fact
they have a veteran team with great leadership, they will definitely
upset many teams this year. Not only have they added a few key players,
but they have worked hard in the off season and stepped it up a notch.
They definitely gave Michigan State a scare when they were tied late in
the game before MSU came out with blazing saddles and scored a few
unanswered goals. They also gave #1 ranked Eastern Michigan a run for
money when they almost hung on to win, but instead, EMU like MSU came out
like coyotes in the wild and beat up on thier prey. As this weekend
showed, they will be moving up in the rankings with further games against
rival Rose Hulman, U of I, and ISU.
10. Rose Hulman (0-4)(NOT RANKED)- This weekend was definitely a barn-burner
for the likes of Rose Hulman who last year like this year had the same
kind of start. Unlike Michigan State, Purdue, and Eastern Michigan,
Rose Hulman probably will not contend for a National title, however,
they can only get better after this weeks horrendous shell-lacking
a goal differential of 10 goals for and 36 goals against(-26).
Furthermore, they may not be an offensive powerhouse like some schools,
if they can work on thier defense, they will contend with the Fighting
Illiani, Ball State, and the ISU Redbirds.
