This is kind of the wrong place to post this, as this was in houseleague, but being an AIHL player, id rather hear from you guys.

Hopefully a ref or two can chime in as well....

Tonight:

HOME team has possession of puck in own zone as he is slashed...Ref throws arm up to signal delayed penalty....HOME team goalie starts to make his way to bench....HOME team player makes a move, loses the puck, AWAY team recovers and shoots the puck into empty net......Referee calls "my time" then signals a goal for the AWAY team....

When asked for an explanation, he said he screwed up, and the penalty he was actually meaning to call was a HOME team penalty. That being said, the whistle should have been blown earlier because the HOME team had possession of the puck. The ref admitted his error, but still awarded the AWAY team the goal, which actually determined the winner of the game.

LOL!! I have never had this happen before, crazy mistake. House league refs right??!!

My question is...in this case , or any case, what happens if the ref makes such a crucial error? Sure , everyone has their bad penalty calls every now and then, but this was a little worse. Could the ref have just put player in box and not counted the goal?? Is there a right call here? hahahaha, any response is appreciated!

I would say that both refs would have to discuss and then determine that goal would be called back. Because the Home team had the penalty and if he was controlling the puck, goal would have to be taken back. Somewhat like if a ref calls no goal then play goes on for a few minutes, then it is determined by another ref or instant replay (College and NHL), then it is a goal. And Yes I do believe a Ref has the right to take the goal back just as long as both refs can determine that the HOME team controlled the puck.

My ruling is based on ice hockey but,
Technically the whistle never blow until the goal is scored. In USA Hockey you play until the whistle not intended whistle (as in NCAA). For example, in college ref goes to blow a whistle while he is bring it to his mouth puck goes in, its no goal, but in USA Hockey its determined by the whistle.
That being said, if I made that mistake I would wave off the goal and say I messed up the call (like he did) and put the correctly penalized player in the box.
So in the truest interpretation of the rules, maybe its a goal. Regardless, that shouldn't happen.

Thanks for the responses guys,

Haha, i agree, this should never happen....but it did....maybe he had a brain fart , asleep, texting..IDK!

I agree, the goal should be waived, and the correct player put in box. This will probably never happen again, at least, i hope not!

This happened in the NHL a few years back. Play was ruled "no goal" but the puck really went in the net. Play continued for what seemed like several minutes and then OTHER team scored. Just to add to the confusion I think there was even a delayed call involved somewhere which really twisted things up because if "technically" the play should have stopped when the first goal was scored and the clock is reset back to that point, then "technically" the second goal AND the penalty never happened either.

Definitely one of those clips that is perfect for officiating seminars!
