Wheels Down... Opening the new rink took the support of the local hockey community, including the University of North Texas hockey team and parents of children’s league players.
But Lone Star isn’t just for people who already play hockey.
In an effort to introduce others to the sport, owners Tim and Melinda Mangrum established the Lone Star League, a nonprofit group offering scholarships to children who otherwise couldn’t afford to play. The group accepts money and equipment donations.
Five children have already been awarded scholarships. Melinda Mangrum said the group — whose five-member board includes parents and Haslam, the UNT team captain — hopes to be able to sponsor 30 children.
A portion of the rink’s profits also goes into the nonprofit’s coffers.
