Edit for first weekend results
Bored in class and dont want to learn so here we go....
DI
1. Tampa (3-1)
Recovered from a surprising loss to NCST and beat GMU 3-2 in a hard fought game. beat NCST in rematch
2. GMU (3-1)
Two good wins against UCF and Miami and what looks like a sloppy 12-4 win over 0-4 DII bottom feeder WCU. Played well against Tampa and will be battling for the top spot with Tampa all year. These two teams wont see each other again until regionals. only DI team to play two DII teams last weekend.
3. UCF (2-1-1)
Solid 8-1 win against Kennesaw and easy win over MTST combined with a tie against NCST give UCF the third spot. 9-3 loss to GMU makes it look like that their is a gap between UT/GMU and the rest of DI
4. KSU (2-2)
Losing by 7 goals to both UCF and UT put KSU in the 4th spot. Solid win against NCST and easy win over USC.
5. NCST(1-2-1)
Surprising strong start with a tie against UCF and a big win over Tampa but lost the second game to UT and KSU to finish the weekend. NCST is always a very solid team that can steal a win from more talented teams.

FAU INCOMPLETE obvious reasons
back in class so here is DII
DII
1) ECU (4-0)
played well this weekend with two strong wins vs Bethel and FGCU and two easy wins over MTST and GT. I didnt watch them at all this weekend but it seems they are a stronger team than last year.
2) FGCU (3-1)
Played well in their innagural weekend. High scoring offense and what looked like some solid goaltending.
3) Bethel (2-2)
Bethel was the big mystery team heading into the season. Stories of a team with full funding from the athletic department proved true as Bethel rolled up in a Coach bus, and the team is pretty strong. Anchored by 3 Canadian imports, bethel has a solid base to build on and a very good goalie. Surprised Miami in game 1, but struggled the rest of the weekend losing to FGCU and ECU. An easy win against GT finished their weekend.
4) Miami (2-2)
People can say that Miami (we) should be higher but we did not play well this weekend. We should have beat Bethel easily and we didnt. Miami as a team is really good. Their goalie (me) sucked. I lost the Bethel game and gave my team no chance to beat GMU. Miami finished with easy wins against MTSU (13-0) and VT (9-1)
5) VT (3-1)
There is a major drop off here. VT played 3 cupcake teams and won easily but were easily beaten by Miami on Sunday morning. VT probably played the easiest opening schedule of any team this weekend which is why they have a 3-1 record. Once FSU, USF, and UF play some games I expect them all to jump VT.
6) Georgia College (2-1-1)
Another team that benefited from an easy schedule. 2 easy wins against WCU and Kennesaw B, and a tie with USC are not very impressive especially when they got beat easily by VT.
7) USC 1-2-1
Only win was against WCU, another team that will drop in rankings once everyone plays some games.
the rest
WCU, GT, MTST, (0-4)
Unranked
USF, FSU, UF, JMU
teams currently unranked because they did not play this weekend. I expect all of them to end up in the rankins above VT once they start playing
Thoughts???

what do people expect to happen?
who are the best DI, DII and B teams?
who will come out of nowhere and surprise everyone?
who will take a step back from last year?
I think I am most intrigued to see Bethel and FGC play. I want to see if Bethel is any good considering the amount of scholarship/canadian kids they have...

we lost 1 guy who is studying abroad and 1 guy to injury, but picked up a couple guys. we should be a solid team this year.
you guys gave us a tough time in regionals. that prevent box will drive any team crazy and your goalie played out of his mind for most of the game. we used that strategy against DI Florida about 3 years ago and it drove them crazy.
how u guys look this year

Good to hear. Half of our team is new, and we are a lot better than last year (in my opinion) I heard someone is out for you guys because of regionals last year. Is that true? If so, that's unfortunate. We have one of our defensement out for these games (injury as well)
Do you know anything about Gulf Coast?

To get back on topic, I see FGCU going 4-0. They have a pretty easy schedule minus Bethel. Why are they playing our B squad? Makes no sense as they are a DII team. Not fair to the B teams.
Regardless of the outcomes, it should be a great weekend. Good luck everyone.

seems odd that they even have mixed games this year. with 6 teams at the regional every DI team could play 4 different DI teams. its also curious that GMU is playing 2 of its games against DII teams even if they are against what are expected to be 2 of the better DII teams

Reason that we (Tampa) will be playing NC State twice is just because we won't be up north again until regionals. We are scheduled to play 2 fort myers, west palm and if all works out fly up to skatesafe in NY for the ECRHA just because everyone on our team basically lives up there. As frustrating as it is to play the same team twice it makes sense.

Here's my prediction's for the first tournament D1
GMU 4 - 0
Tampa 3 - 1 (lose's to GMU)
UCF 3 - 1 (lose's to GMU)
NCSU 1 - 3 (lose's to Tampa x2, UCF)
KSU 1 - 3 (lose's to all D1 teams)

That makes perfect sense. My comment was more to the fact that GMU will play 2 DII games this weekend and now that I think about it will probably mostly play DII games the rest of the year, unless they go out of conference. with the 3 Florida tournaments FAU, and UCF will only see GMU at one other weekend and UT won't see GMU again until regionals.

Back to the why D1 is playing D2 discussion.
GMU was originally scheduled to play 3 D1 games (FAU, UCF, Tampa) While we are not sure how or why the "other" team got placed on our schedule. (Maybe it was a backup plan in case we got run against UCF, FAU, Tampa and they didn't want to hear us complain about being forced to move D1) Seriously...
While I am disappointed FAU backed out of the event, I am excited to play Miami Beezeral as we had a good game last year, even if it was your first game. I wish we could have met you at regionals but it was not to be. We are a different team this year, not sure we are better, but definetely different. The addition of our B team will allow our top guys to get more time, instead of having to play everyone.
As for the D1 schedule, we will be playing D1 KSU and D1 NCSU a lot this year at the more "Northern" SECRHL tournaments. I expect we will see quality D2 programs like ECU & Bethel a few times as well. I also expect we will see some good teams (like D1 Towson) from the ECRHA come down for the inter-regional at The Box February 19th http://secrhl.org/schedule.php?event_id=1224 I'm sure ECUhockey can tell you that we didn't have an easy time playing Brockport, Rowan, Neumann, and Shippensburg last year.
I have no say on the Guy vs. Pohl debate. Didn't see enough of Guy.

We are definately excited to be playing you guys again. It would be nice to play the game when both teams are in mid-season form but saturday should be a fun game. In terms of your schedule its just odd that this is probably the only time you will see UCF and UT all year so it would make sense if you played atleast one of those teams twice this weekend. Regardless you guys have a pretty strong opening weekend schedule, and we definately won't be scared of big bad GMU.
good luck to you guys this weekend and this year.

My two cents... I wouldn't throw the Miami Goalie under the bus.
Bethel scored 4 Power play goals and 3 of those were in the second period allowing them to come back.
In my opinion Miami lost this game because they didn't have a coach on their bench to help their team keep their composure.
It was obvious from the stands that as Bethel was "Hooting and hollaring" after each goal just to get Miami off their game, and it was working.
I don't think Miami ever took a timeout just to settle things down.
Congrats to Bethel on the win, but I think it the Miami loss had more to do with a lack of coach for Miami than it did anything with their goalie.

Miami was up like 5 rip, u cant blame the goalie for the other team burying like 9 straight goals....apparently no one else on the miami squad wanted to do anything either....took the rest of the game off and decided to go for it with about 2 min remaining. Id say just a sloppy game from miami's team as a whole. blaming that loss on the goaltender is absurd.

Totally agree with your rankings Beezeral except might move NCST up.
I would like to add just one more thing:
I was really shocked at how good the B teams were this year. Having seen the B teams in the past UCF B was on par where they have been years before, but Kennesaw B was MUCH IMPROVED over last year. ECU B was Really good. I really thought GMU B would be an average B team this year, but it looks as if the bar is a lot higher and most of these B teams will beat most of the D2 teams this year with maybe the exception of the top 4 (ECU, FGCU, Bethel, Miami).

NCST is hard to rank, they are a very solid but unspectacular team. they dont have any stars but they play smart fundamental hockey and play very hard. They are a team that everyone hates to play but don't have enough talent to really be an elite team

NCSU...is solid. With the addition of this Beason kid to the Davis and Iadanza tandem...who raked lat year BTW. Check the stats. NCSU can play with anyone. They are a GOALIE away from being a GREAT team.

NCSU is a weird team. Some games they will play a team to a 5-5 tie, and the same team will beat them 11-3 or 12-4. Happened a few times last year.

Point is...NCSU has NO Goaltending at ALL! And they ARE still in every game. 31 goals against last weekend in 4 games says it all. How many goals do those guys have to score? If they ever get quality goaltending they WILL go on quite a roll.

NCSU does have a good goalie Colosimo who played for WCU has some good stats over the years and kept them in alot of games. He played the first time they played Tampa this weekend and picked up a W.
