Hi Folks,

Both the crowds and the volume have begun to increase at the Silver Creek Sportsplex as the action heats up on the first morning of play at the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Championships at Silver Creek Sportsplex in San Jose, CA.

In Division I games that started at 9 a.m., Central Florida outlasted Ohio State, 4-3; North Texas edged Florida Atlantic, 4-2; and Hofstra squeezed past Towson, 2-1.

In 10 a.m. games, Long Beach State solidly defeated Rutgers, 6-3; Arizona State clobbered Rhode Island, 10-1; and Connecticut handled UC Santa Barbara, 7-3.

Games in progress include Cal Poly San Luis Obispo taking on Sam Houston State, and Michigan State against the University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL). At the beginning of the third period, MSU and UMSL were tied up at 3-3, but UMSL has scored two quick goals to take a 5-3 lead. With less than 7 minutes left, Cal Poly was up 7-2 over a very short-staffed (one substitute) Sam Houston State team.

The stories are just starting. More to come soon!

So far, in pool B at least, a lot of depleted rosters and missing key players. North Texas shorthanded, Florida Atlantic shorthanded, and Rhode Island shorthanded..... Arizona looks well and ready, going to be a tough team to beat for anyone.

Who's missing from FAU and Rhode Island?

Hi Folks,

In a big upset early in the tournament, the State University of New York at Buffalo Wings defeated perennial champion Lindenwood University, 7-2, in a penalty-filled 12 p.m. game.

The score was a close 2-1 in favor of Buffalo after the first period, but a goal at the beginning of the second period by Chris Kendall, assisted by Alex Durinka, gave the Wings a 3-1 lead. Two power-play goals by Tyler Walser, both assisted by Durinka, broke open the game, 5-1. Buffalo scored two more in the third before Lindenwood finally scored again, making the final score 7-2.

Asked how big of an upset he thought it was, Buffalo coach Eric Werner said, "I think we knew we could skate with them. We know how we have to play against them; it's whether we execute or not. Ty Walser came up big, and [Alex] Christie, our goalie, is a great goalie. When he plays like that, we're going to win."

Lindenwood also hit several posts, and one of the team's top players, John "Johnny Mac" McGuinness occupied the penalty box several times in the game. That effectively took him off the floor and played into the Wings' hands. That's not likely to happen in future games in this tournament, and it will be interesting to see how Johnny Mac bounces back.

Buffalo is missing Felber and Gasiewicz, which makes a big difference with only 6 skaters now. ASU has 7 skaters and is missing VanBuskirk, probably their best forward. Lindenwood lost Gouge, the best player in the entire league. I'm not saying your, or other team's losses, are meaningless but I mean...plenty other teams are missing players too, it is what it is...

FAU is missing Thiefault and Duncanson
URI is missing Nelson and Rieger
UNT is missing Zelt and a a few others I believe

Did not get a chance to watch other games, I can only comment on what my pool is doing right now, which is why I left out the others. Lindenwood lost to buffalo, so it doesn't look like they lost much of a step.

This situation here calls a call for concern with the league. Nationals is scheduled so deep in the semester, that it is hard for players to leave a week of school behind (I am really in a bad situation, my classes end next week). Is there another route to take for nationals in the schedule that will allow more players to play?

*ASU was so controlling did not even look like they were missing a step at all. They are a good choice for the darkhorse for the week for sure.

Agreed, key players missing has less of an effect on the top 4 teams. For teams below them, they can be devastating. I know you guys missing Thiefault is huge. URI missing Nelson is huge. ASU seems okay but I'm surprised because VanBuskirk is a great player for them. Not sure about UNT's missing players.

Roster is inaccurate (not sure why). This is what we have for the week:

Florida Atlantic:
11 D Andrew Beyer
13 D David Siegel
14 D Christopher Franzoi
21 F Greggory Kneeves
23 F Christopher Capandonis
44 D Brittany Johnson
89 F Greg Boyd
99 F Sean Pendergast
34 G Phillip Diorio

The players listed as scratches is a goalie that played one game when I was unavailable and the skater quit before our first game.

Roster is inaccurate (not sure why). This is what we have for the week:

Please tell your coaches to be more prudent when submitting the rosters before the game.

The game has been edited to reflect who was actually at the game.

Just a quick thing about your pictures, not a big deal for me since I am not one of them but must kill them to some extent...its Arizona State University, you have them in your pictures as their rival University of Arizona.

Thanks for the heads up. I had it 33 percent correct, though. ;)

I agree...I can't believe a team that went 13-2 in the regular season could get beat 18-0 and I can't believe how weak their division must be. That's a joke. Also, Cincy seems to have run it up just a tad

Agree that's really bad, 18-0. But they only gave one bid to that region for D2, what are they supposed to do? You give them no bids, why even have them play in region in the first place?

Agreed, every region deserves a bid. It's like mid-majors in basketball. You have to give each region at least one bid. But it is ridiculous for any game at Nationals to have a score like that. Maybe Cincinnati is too good or the South needs to do something different to be more competitive, but that was just silly today. Let's see how the rest of the week pans out though.

In other news, is Buffalo the real deal this year or is it just a matter of Lindenwood and UMSL playing down in the Pool Play which technically doesn't count? And can Buffalo keep this level of play up with only 6 skaters? I personally think Buffalo looks great, but I wouldn't declare them the champs yet only because the other two teams have been there before and they are battle tested in the playoff round. But after day 1, I would have to think that a Buffalo win this year wouldn't necessarily be an upset.

I think that it was I that predicted the rains to come from the Midwest in DII. The West Chester vs. Cincy game should be a good game.

Rhode Island got Nelson and Reiger back yesterday against FAU; rumor is they missed their flight....
