ANAHEIM - Sometimes, the simplest, most obvious question is the best one:

How does San Jacinto, not particularly a breeding ground for professional athletes anyway and definitely not a hockey hotbed, put a guy on the threshold of a National Hockey League career?

Jake Newton, now an Anaheim Duck, smiled at the query.

It's the story of a kid who grew up playing roller hockey, part of a family that was nuts enough about the sport to own a roller hockey rink in Hemet for a time, before moving to the ice when he was 10.

It's also, in microcosm, an example of the way Wayne Gretzky's trade to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988 transformed hockey in the Sun Belt. The interest generated by that event produced a wave of kids from warmer climes making their way from youth programs to college rosters and NHL draft lists.
