Looks like we may have to take our first flight with our sons equipment. Any suggestions? I was hoping to gate check his backpack and stick bag, but they may not let the sticks through security. Any other usuful tips?
Thanks,

They should let you through. You may have to go via oversize baggage, but the main issue depends upon which airline you use as to whether they deem teh bag and sticks as seperate items, and charge you more for the pleasure. Some airlines, most Canadian ones included will put the sticks and kit through as one item.

The hockey bag and stick bag are considered one piece of luggage.
Best advice is to go on your airlines website, print out the baggage fee guidelines and policies. They will tell you right there.
Make sure you bring the print outs with you because they will try to charge you the full amount every time.
Show them the print outs and you will be fine. At most you will pay for one bag or oversized luggage.

I always take my skates and gloves in a seperate bag as a carry on. If they lose your luggage you can buy or borrow the rest of equiptment.

seconded, I usually also take my jersey in carry-on 'just in case'.
Also, with the tightening of baggage limits this saves you on an incredible amount of luggage weight - wheels mostly.
