Florida Atlantic university is d1. The league has not changed it yet. Florida is d2 from what they said I believe. Tampa is unfortunately still in d2. Usf was thinking about moving up to d1 in hopes of a full roster (hopefully Steve will chime in about that one).

what all teams are still not on site. any new teams. any new players, and why would a team like flordia who has such a big school with lots of talent to pull from and has had such success in D1 want to move to D2

USF is still D2. Never crossed our mind to go D1. Last year we had 6 or 7 skaters at each tournament.
UT will be very very good next year. The only thing stopping them is probably getting all the matching gear.

FAU claims they will be D1. They had a minor falling out so it will be interesting to see where they actually wind up.
UF said they are trying to stay D1. The problem they are having is that they graduated 90% of last years team. Also they are having financial issues with matching equipment and most importantly the biggest problem is finding a coach. If all things permit they claim they will be staying D1.
USF I dont see bumping up to D1 anytime soon. I think they have the talent to compete, but just not the organization or dedication right now for it.
Tampa will be D2 this year for one reason and one reason only, personal preference. There is nothing standing in the way of them competing D1 (the school would pay for matching gear if they needed it), they would just rather stay D2. Personally, depending on where FAU goes the competition in D2 will prob be better this year anyways.

Once again, for the fifth time, FAU will be in D1. No matter what happens or has happened, FAU will be in D1. Let's try and keep the story straight and not spread rumors (I am tired of people bitching to me about how they hear we are playing D2 and are sandbagging)......

It has nothing to do with personal preference. One, we dont have a coach and two, our school doesn't just throw money to us for whatever we need, so our reasons for not moving up are the exact same as everyone else's.

I heard ECU will be moving to D2 as well, leaving only 4 D1 teams, and only 1 in the northern conference. D2 looks to be pretty competetive though.

So of all of the DII teams who were crying last year because the weren't taking enough of them to nationals.... only one is moving up? and more are moving down? Its not really like theres any extra pressure up here in DI. Except to have matching gloves... bfd.
MTSU will be playing DI and it looks like were adding a B team as well. what is NCSU doing? and is ECU moving down for sure?

Yea I think ECU is down for sure. State will be D1.I didn't know MTSU was gonna be d1. so that's 5 D1 teams.

Why if fl int going to D2 they have always been strong. I also believe teams like fl state, Miami, and Tampa should all be D1 and I think James Madison and ECU and VT should have stayed D1 as well. Its kind of crazy that there are 20 D2 teams and 5 D1 teams.

those teams don't have a chance of winning nationals in D1 or even making it to nationals, so they go d2
Hockeyguy22
09-20-2009, 10:23 PM
So if a team does not think they can win they should automatically drop down? before you know it D1 will have two teams that do nothing but play against each other and it will make our conference look weaker on a national scale teams do have off years and some teams take time to build up get organized and get the word out to students faculty and sponsers. upsets happen the more teams in a conference the better it looks overall plus there are more bids in D1 so your chances of getting a bid, especially in the SECRHL automatically went down cause instead of competing with 5 teams you are competing with 19 others. True D1 might be top heavy for a year or two but the programs would grow and if several teams came up at once it wouldnt be as hard on a weaker team that just came up by itself. if teams such as S Fl, Tampa, VT, JMU, FL Int(Which has been very competitive in D! for a while), ECU, and FSU. D1 might have 2-3 teams def at top of pack but would be more competitive overall and in a couple of years would balance out. Just looks like every year we loose D1 teams and we really cant afford to loose anymore we need to start bringing teams up.

All these teams except Tampa have played D1 and Tampa can hang or beat with every D1 team in our Conference

WE (FSU) wanted to move up, but we were just lacking a coach, and the funds necessary to make the move. It doesn't necessarily have to do with skill at all. We know they're are better teams in our conference, but we have been in rebuilding mode the last couple of seasons after our coach moved to texas. plus we just get money from our school to pay the league and our team dues are close to 1000$ for practicing and traveling. A lot of college students who are mostly out of state on our team jsut don't have the funds to make the move up.
CSteamer
09-21-2009, 12:27 PM
Its true. Its difficult to get the funds necessary to get matching equipment (gloves, helmets, etc) and it can be even more difficult to find someone who is willing to coach a team and travel with a club roller hockey team. This is why so many teams are in D2 now. It will probably be that way for awhile because most of the public schools down here give their club teams very little money whatsoever and most of us are poor college kids. It is what it is.

Every year I hear how tough the Caudy brothers are behind their full cage. If players and or their peers think certain players are that intimidating, then shed the Mask of Courage and play full contact... say in the ECHL or CHL... L.O.L... Gloveside

Right...since the opportunities to play in the ECHL and CHL for players in the SECRHL are endless. Way to think that one through.

We moved down because we could not afford to get matching gear and we could not find a coach.

D2 is a lot harder to make it to nationals, so i have no idea what you're talking about.
16 teams go from DII out of 70?
and 20 teams go from DI out of like 40?

GMU hasn't played Tampa or UCF. Tampa beat UCF 5-4 on a goal with 27 seconds left in the game. Tampa has 4 or 5 real good players, but lack depth. Also, their goalie stood on his head, plus got a little help from some posts. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions about them being better then UCF. I think UCF and Tampa are the two best teams in the region, and yes, Tampa should play D1.

csteamer is right.. caudy.. YOUR just mad cause YOU hit the post!!! haha.. The game was an awesome game. I give UCF's goalie a ton of credit. He's often over looked and happens to be a really good goalie. Guy completely stood on his head. Once we stayed out of the box we played a much better game. btw I scored with 37 seconds left :D

both GMU and Tampa are correctly placed in DII. Tampa while very good lacks depth. GMU was not a good team at all last year, but now is a very strong team. I believe they return everyone next year, so I would expect them to be playing DI next year.

George Mason University is still just trying to build their program, which is in it's second year. We admittedly had a bad record last year, but were lucky to add a few of the missing pieces from last year, most notably some scoring and a great goalie. GMU will lose 3 of it's top 5 defensemen next year (Assitant Captain Jon McDorman, Reed Tomson, & Eric Wroble), along with forward Dan Brooks. Unless all of George Mason's recruits attend GMU, it is highly unlikely GMU will play D1 next year, as we will be basically down to 2 lines. Another reason we would like to stay D2 for now is that when we want to be competitive when we play in the ECRHA inter-regional tournament, which is usually much closer to our campus than most SECRHL tournaments. We are hopeful of adding a "B" team next year, but right now I don't see that happening.

you better believe that brooks is a dangler. we might be losing our big game enforcer though in Kyle Luukkonen next year, damn you VaTech! Next semester though we are getting a great player and then next year we are looking to add two really solid players. so we will hopefully be solid. and i think that we could compete in D1...or at least i want to try, cause its better to go .500 and play good teams rather than beat up on teams all the time. not saying we just beat up on teams, just saying that you got to play good competition to get better.

Lensing7,
First off I agree.. GMU coming from last year to this year has dramatically improved. Its great to see. My brother and I built the program here at UT and its something to be proud of. The sad part is no matter what division you play in at SECRHL tournaments you wont get that much better. The goalies for the most part except for a selected bunch are basically brutal. I know a few of you are playing aihl.. go play narch platinum if you want to get better.. go to the out of region tournaments for example st louis and the ecrha.. even the inter regional tourny may not be strong..

Thats what i was thinking with the SECRHL tournaments. I was thinking that we should move to the ECRHA next year. Like Lensing said we are getting could be getting 3-4 tier 1 players next year and should be able to compete with any team in the NCRHA. As for D1 next year.... i want to play the top D1 teams, but go to D2 nationals cause we'd have a real shot at winning. I see that we played you at festerville for AIHL, that must have been a fun drive.

well said kotch. this is just a way to continue playing hockey. it doesnt come close to what we were doing in NY and its tough to improve performance in this league. its still a good time but i try to go into it with the attitude of just having a good time. if i dont play my best hockey, so be it. i played serious back in the day with midgets for narch

We have all seen our better days pass us by, and having TORHS at my home rink this past year kind of got me and others back into the game a little.
These tournaments are to hang out with friends, play some hockey, and mostly for me, get away from school for a brief amount of time. It is not about winning anymore, its more so about having fun and at least being competitive.
We went 1-2-1 this weekend, and I can guarantee you not a single player was mad with their performance. We competed with 7 or 6 players this weekend and held our own. Leading UCF all game and ending up with a tie in the last minute of the game, then losing by only 2 goals a few hours later again, then losing a close game to UT (best team in SECRHL) (score didn't reflect how close the actual game was; back and forth all game and UT got 4 goals in the last 5 minutes when we all ran out of gas). We have some new plans and changes in effect for the second half of this season and expect some different outcomes.
If I was GMU, I would definitely join the ECRHA if possible, its an all around much more competitive conference and it sounds like your location is closer to those events than our events.

I think the goal for most of us is to have fun. We all want to win because most of us have played on some of the best teams in the country at some point in time but we all realize that the dream of the NHL is gone and just want to play someore competitive hockey and represent our schools before we have to join beer leagues full time and join the real world

I know its not the best hockey all of us have played. But this past weekend was a pretty competitive weekend between Tampa, UCF, and FAU. I think everyone was trying pretty hard, and everyone wanted to win. I know I was pissed when we tied FAU the first game, and lost to Tampa in the last 30 seconds of the last game. Yea, I'm there to have fun too, but I still want to win. Maybe its just me.

We all want to win. There is no denying that. Everyone gives 100% in the games. The point is that this is not like it was when we were in HS where if we didnt win our lives were over.
