Hi -- A number of the league directors in the metro San Diego area have formed the San Diego Roller Hockey Alliance -- these leagues have committed to work together to acheive many objectives, first and foremost to bring new players into roller hockey, especially in the 6, 8 and 10U ranks to fill the pipeline for middle school, high school, rec, and travel teams.
We were very fortunate to be able to have Daryn Goodwin as an advisor and he has offered his support, and delivered for us CJ Yoder and Steve Campbell for a "Skate with the Pros' day a week or so ago at TriCity Inline Hockey League's great facility in Oceanside CA. These pros gave their time, CJ flew in from Colorado and Steve drove in from his home, and spent the entire day on Sat working with about 75 kids from TriCitys, City of Escondido, and 4S ranch rec programs, ages 12U 10U and 8U. It was awesome and we are truly thankful for the selfless volunteer effort all these folks have put in to help grow the sport locally here. Look on the RHA website for an article on the day and the following day, Sunday, where CJ helped us coaches out by giving us his philosophy, drills and expectations for our kids.
Long live SoCal roller hockey! Lets get the pipeline full of new players who can continue the proud tradition of SoCal hockey (and I include the awesome Eddie L up at 949, Corona, Huntington Beach, etc-- all these facilites and the people behind them do so much for us!)
With Thanks, bob gauthier, 4S ranch rec roller league, San Diego CA
Edit - Post Script-- I just had a few moments and actually went back and read a bunch of posts from Jan on the RHA / USA hockey/ etc subjects. WOW!
The notion for the SDRHA was born in the fall of 08, after TriCity (501c3), Temecula, Escondido, and 4S(started as c3, now run by the county government as neutral) and a few other local directors saw declining enrollment in the key 10 and unders rec programs. We also thought that with the current SoCal economy going south, we would have some opportunity to get some transition ice players (since many of the roller programs are a small fraction of a typical ice program in costs). Having known Daryn through my youngest son playing 8U last year, and since hes a local guy, we thought we ought to ask Daryn his views-- since we;re just a bunch of local yokels, nearly all volunteers, with an interest in the sport (for me 15 + years as a volunteer here in SD with several leagues, rec and travel teams, Jim up at TriCity, 100% volunteer who places the kids above all else, etc). So we did -- in late Jan we all met at a great local watering hole and threw ideas around like slapshots, many close, lots high and wide, and a few in the net (so we thought). We agreed to form the SD Roller Hockey Alliance (named it ourselves). Well, after the session Daryn told us about the RHA. Was it coincidence or divinely planned? We will never know but I can assure all that our little 4 league group were talking about what Daryn was talking about exactly in parallel, without each knowing of the other!
We issues a press release announcing the SDRHA in late Jan. Daryn has been a HUGE supporter of the efforts to grow the sport in our areas. Thats the reason and the only reason we are aligned here in SD. We have no dog in the fight on the AAU/USA/RHA fight except to say that when I called Daryn to ask for help=-- he showed up and contributed! Thats the only connection we have with RHA -- they are our friends. As far as I know, none of our rinks are RHA members yet, but I expect that we will be in near future where it makes sense=== for me at 4S, I get the rink for free from the county for my rec league, we make ZERO dollars, ZERO salary, and live off dues of $25 per kid for 10 games, plus some donations from anonymous donors who love the sport and want to see it thrive. My 2 kids will be at NARCh and will join I will say for sure!
So if you were wondering (and I would think you might if you have followed this forum, I just joined today and had no idea of all this stuff back in Jan!) just for the record I thought I ought to make sure that I was clear.
PS I need 8U's in San Diego for a new travel team we are putting together! Let me know if you have any!!!!
thanks and all the best, bob
