Im sure that there has been some other posts about it on here but im to lazy to go look. So knowing that can anyone tell me how many teams make the playoffs in each division or conference? Im hoping we still have room to squeek in the back door.

i believe that it is 4 teams in all the divisions with 5 or more teams and 3 teams in the ones with less.

23 teams out of a total of 31 make the playoffs? 74%, really? Wow.

I agree... Wow
How about ranking for playoffs in conference rather than division and just take top 8... Division winners get top 3 seeds.
Or let 3 teams max per division make Playoffs. Let all the number 1's get a bye and play the winner of 2 v 3. Seems fair as a one seed should be rewarded.
That would bring down the number to 18 teams making Playoffs. Still a lot, but makes for much better hockey during playoff pushes.

I like ranking the teams by conference like the NHL does, as it allots for one conference being stronger than another...
If the playoffs were to start right now, with the current system, based on winning percentage:
Mid-Atlantic
1-Garden State (0.938)
2-Southampton (0.750)
3-Philadelphia (0.694)
4-Steel City (0.650)
X-Scottdale (0.444)
X-NJ Nightmare (0.167)
New England
1-Suffolk (0.917)
2-Boston (0.694)
3-Long Island (0.562)
4-Massachusetts (0.389)
X-Hartford (0.250)
X-NJ Surge (0.194)
Southeast
1-Richmond (0.750)
2-Maryland (0.700)
3-Georgia (0.521)
4-Raleigh (0.139)
X-Virginia (0.000)
Pacific North
1-San Jose (0.938)
2-Oakland (0.614)
3-NorCal (0.417)
4-East Bay (0.278)
X-Northern California (0.275)
Pacific South
1-Huntington Beach (0.844)
2-Pama (0.577)
3-Junior Ducks (0.500)
4-Irvine (0.462)
X-San Diego (0.071)
Southwest
1-Las Vegas (0.800)
2-Phoenix (0.615)
3-El Paso (0.200)
X-Tucson (0.125)
In Bill's system, with division winners taking top 3 in the conference, and ranking the rest of the conference out. If you make the cut at 12 (actually taking 1 more team in the west than the current system does):
EAST CONFERENCE
1-Garden State (0.938)
2-Suffolk (0.917)
3-Richmond (0.750)
4-Southampton (0.750)
5-Maryland (0.700)
T6-Philadelphia (0.694)
T6-Boston (0.694)
8-Steel City (0.650)
9-Long Island (0.562)
10-Georgia (0.521)
11-Scottdale (0.444)
12-Massachusetts (0.389)
------------------------------
13-Hartford (0.250)
14-NJ Surge (0.194)
15-NJ Nightmare (0.167
16-Raleigh (0.139)
17-Virginia (0.000)
WEST CONFERENCE
1-San Jose (0.938)
2-Huntington Beach (0.844)
3-Las Vegas (0.800)
4-Phoenix (0.615)
5-Oakland (0.614)
6-Pama (0.577)
7-Junior Ducks (0.500)
8-Irvine (0.462)
9-NorCal (0.417)
10-East Bay (0.278)
11-Northern California (0.275)
12-El Paso (0.200)
------------------------------
13-Tucson (0.125)
14-San Diego (0.071)
Not much would change (Raleigh wouldn't get in, Scottdale would, and Northern California make it in the extra 12th spot) However, if you cut it off at 8, you see the playoffs as much more of an acheivement, with teams in the East with winning seasons not making the cut (Long Island, Georgia)
Anyway, the long winded and over-exemplified point is... the playoffs should be special, not just extra games for almost everyone...

74% is way to many teams getting in.

Its great to see people coming up with solutions though...
The original plan was only to have the top team from every division go to Philly - I personally thought that was a bit crazy, on the other hand, I thought this was too, but hey at least we are approaching it as a league and working on fixing it for the following season to make it the best it can be - Everyone will throw a vote in on it and we'll see
I think it should be based on the conference and the top 8 should make it....or have the top 2 in each division - I agree with Sherwood...make it special, like him - I did like that you spent time typing all that out man....off day...bored?

So what is the actual format. The divisions play a division playoff and the winners advance to the conference championship? Where would that be held? Then the two finalists go to Philly for the finals? Stio give me some answers man.

you are slow....isnt it at the beginning of this post
Our division has 4 teams - 3 make it --- Divisions with 5 or more teams will have 4 make it
Each division crowns a champion - 1 v 4 and 2 v 3, winners play -- or 2 v 3 and the winner plays #1
Then the winners play for the conference title, same way - all playoffs are best of 3 series - conference winners go to Philly, woo hoo

Adam,
It's possible that Downey was blinded by the glare reflecting off the playing cards to the top of your head. Give him a break. Sheesh.

I agree with Staio and Sherwood. The top 8 in each conference should be a good target for the future. Hey Staio, it looks like we got two votes so far.
Good luck to all down the stretch. It has been an exciting first year.

Just saw the thread and figured I'd toss this out there...
The reason it works in the NHL to only take the top 8 teams in a conference is because the entire conference plays each other more then once, therefore you get a real picture of who is the best in the conference. From what I understand, not everyone in each conference has played against each other (infact after looking at a couple schedules, alot of teams have only played cross-divisional games maybe once or twice.) So if one division is weaker then another, you end up with a couple teams at the top of the division with good win percentages. Then in other divisions where the compeition is clearly better, some of those teams will have lower winning percentages but be better teams then those in teams in the weaker division with higher win percentages.
So in order to only take the "true" top 8 teams, you'd need each conference to play against each other alot more. Follow?

I like the Fire Ants Jerseys on the AIHL home page. Is that a PIHA logo, I see, one not covered with the aihl sticker?

It was a joke... all in good fun. Take a look below the picture, I believe I pointed that out. I love what the Fire Ants do in Hartford and believe they truly are a model organization within the AIHL.

Yeah unfortunately, tyler dasilva's AIHL patch fell off in the early game on Saturday. Hockey being the sport it is when you have a sewn or iron-ed on patch, stuff happens. Too bad its on the photo!
Ill see what the web guy can do to correct it.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with 'not being able to afford' them.

Nebraska,
Teams usually buy the jerseys, not the league... How would that be ironic though? Do you understand what that word means?
I think the last thing anyone wants on this board is a mid season pissing match between the supporters of each league. Let's wait till the end of the season when people will give honest assessments of their leagues.

Pretty pointless to point out a small item on photo. Congrats to Hartford on the playoff push.
I am all for freedom of speech, but hopefully the door will hit Nebraska in the A$$ when he gets booted? Every time I read his posts I think of Billy Madison and the Principal's response to his debate comments...

Thanks for the assist United.
How about you guys give the playoff format a try this season before we try to change it? After we see what the players think about the experience and let the owners chime in with how it worked financially we can see what options are really possible. Things take time to get it right. So far I have heard that the setup with the league has been a lot of fun for the players. The Jamborees sound like they are a big hit among the players who played in them.
