Perfect Opening
Las Vegas Aces Major Squad 5-0, Minors 4-0 on first weekend
The highly anticipated start of the Southwest Division has come and gone. Both Las Vegas squads have prepared over the past few weeks, learning a system and coming together. Many challanges faced the teams over the weekend. Both squads faced a ton of adversity and rose above and beyond expectation. "I got out of them in days what I couldn't from other teams over a whole season," commented head coach Adam Stio. "This squad was willing to work with each other from the start and there was instant credability and trust. This is one of the more passionate groups I have ever worked with."
A thrilling major game kicked off the weekend, the rest was just as good. The minor squad opened their season on Saturday with 6-3 and 4-3 wins over Tuscon's minor team. The forward line of Darren Corsatea and Dereck Prepchuk came alive during game 2. Prepchuk fired in 3 of his 11 goals on the weekend in this game and Corsatea chipped in the 3 of his 13 assists.
Saturday also pitted the majors against Tucson twice more. Both games saw the Aces up through the early second half minutes courtesy of forward Daniel Webster, defender Mike Downey and team captain Adrian Conte. The Desperados held on all weekend and had numerous power play chances to get back. They played each game until the final whistle, though dropping 7-3 and 7-5.
Sunday was all Aces, every hand. The Las Vegas minor team dominated 7-1 and 8-2. Travis Barendt was in all 4 games for the Aces and played well stopping and average of 20 shots per game. Defender Rob Wilson set the tone for the minors all weekend and earned a call-up to the major squad for the last game along with Dereck Prepchuk.
Faced with injury and others out with the flu, the Aces major team turned to call-ups over the weekend. Alek Vinneau was the hero of the OT thriller on opening night, but came down with the flu on Saturday, attempted to play, had no success, and was scratched for Sunday. Defender Jas Vitale also fell ill on Sunday and was unable to skate for the last game. Forward Matt Graham, a healthy scratch for game 1, was injured during game 4 and did not finish the weekend. In the wake, there was defenseman Nick Adimey, who adjusted well with both squads over the weekend and came away +10. The major team finished off the Desparados 9-4 and 6-2 to close out the perfect weekend. Matt Williams (3) and Mike Tozzi (2) split the games for the majors and both played well.
Friday and Saturday night saw some good crowds at the Las Vegas Roller Hockey Center, and the teams did not disappoint. The Aces will host the PIHA Champion Phoenix Dragons next week in major and the Dragons U18 and minor squads. The action starts Saturday afternoon at the LVRHC.
