How does rocket puck differ from the IDS puck?

Rocket pucks are no good. I don't understand why people keep using them. The Machs are easily much better than Rockets because they don't roll. plain and simple.

I am surprised they didn't allow us to vote on this one. We ACC reps voted for the IDS a couple years ago when there was a vote, and no one voted for the rocket puck. Not sure who made this decision, but I doubt it was the players.

Rocket puck has smaller knobs, which tend to wear down faster, causing the puck to roll more frequently as this causes greater friction with the playing surface.

I'm sure its a money thing...so the players don't get to vote, if Rocket Puck gave NCRHA a discount or got a sponsorship from them, players have no say

i like the rocket puck a lot more than the ids whenever it's new, but they do wear down somewhat faster than the ids... guess we'll just have to make sure we're using a new one every few games

The NCRHA does that anyway... I can't remember the last time I saw a worn down puck during a game... Even before the Mach1 was in use they stocked the tournament weekends with fresh pucks...

This is why people are switching to the rocket puck...

they're almost half the price of IDS.

IDS is still the best.

I liked both pucks, but the mach's tended to shatter easily. Especially if it was winter and someone left the pucks in their car over night. They'd break open after one shot off the post.

If money is the problem that is to bad. We pay so much to play, I would rather pay a few extra dollars and continue to use good pucks.

If money is the problem that is to bad. We pay so much to play, I would rather pay a few extra dollars and continue to use good pucks.

This move was 100% about money. The Rocket puck is used by Narch and State Wars and a handful of leagues. That does not equate to "quickly becoming the puck of CHOICE" The league wanted to go with a company that would cut them a deal on pucks and donate pucks for nationals. That would be great if we were talking about something that did not effect the equality of the game. If we were on the fence between blue or red water bottles, then go with the best deal.

While we are seeking "the best deal" and not the "best quality of of play for our league", why don't we play on outdoor facilities with chain link fence? I bet we could get a better deal?

Seeking bargain deals over quality, is not the route to excellence...is that not our goal anymore? If the rocket puck was superior to the IDS puck, then fine, switch. But most people don't feel that way. The majority of people, if polled, would say the pucks are fairly similar OR the IDS is better. And the majority of the rinks/leagues/tournaments in this country use IDS.

So why switch? To save a few dollars? Doesn't make any sense.

Putting on my flame suit now...

Oh sure. I graduate, and then the league switches to a hockey puck rather than a bouncy ball. That's just great. .....I have to agree. Its rare to see an IDS sit flat on the rink, especially on fast surfaces like the icecourt at the new rollin' ice in San Jose. The ids was a joke during our WCRHL tournament there. I think part of the problem is how light weight it is, I like the extra weight the rocket puck has. I will be happily retiring my ids' to where they've always belonged....a trashcan

I would have to agree. Because I am an inline and ice player (better at ice but prefer the inline game, go figure), I am used to shooting a heavier more rounded puck. Most inline pucks are great and are not to light, but I can't seem to hit the net with the IDS as much as with other pucks. My shots always fly to high, about 1-2 feet above the crossbar. My personal favorite puck to shoot is the Franklin Commander, nice weight and smoothness, but I have broken my fair share against the boards and posts.

I can't even begin to tell you how many IDS pucks we had break on us last season in the ECRHA. The pegs came out of those things so fast it seemed like we went through at least a puck every other game or so. Plus, we use fresh pucks every weekend and don't keep them in the rotation if they are worn. I think this is a good move for the NCRHA and players will realize how much better they are once they use them in games. I frankly think the IDS puck was very detrimental to the game and i am glad they are gone.

Then he gave it a hell of a guess...lol, considering his statement is 100% true.

I def. think that the rocket puck is better but I think it depends on the surface you play on. The ice court material better suits a lighter puck like the IDS but sport court is perfect for the rocket puck. Thats just my opinion.
But I am glad we are using rocket puck.

I HATE the rocket puck. Every narch tournament ive played in our entire team is always complaining. IDS is by far the best puck in my opinion. rocket pucks roll more, and dont move as easily along the surface either. Its like passing sandpaper.

i cant believe this is even a debate. the ids puck is the worst puck ever. its just one hard solid piece of plastic. when it starts to bounce it bounces rediculusly high. at coast to coast or 949 if you use an ids you might as well play with a golf ball. rocket all the way. the mach is nice too. i wish they would have never went to the ids in the first place.

Richard,

Can you start a poll on this topic....maybe throw in a few more popular pucks too. Maybe with the Franklin Commander like ARHA mentioned too. I couldn't believe a Franklin anything was mentioned on here, be sure to add the Mylec Orange Puck if you add the Franklin though.

Hey Jack,

I think you can add that poll very easily yourself. I think it's one of the "advanced posts" options. Let me know if you can't find it!

I feel the rocket is the better puck for the fast moving excess and ice court, but the IDS moves SOOOO much faster on regular sport court and Mateflex. I prefer the IDS because it has better feel on the stick.

I sure wish that Mach 1 pucks didn't infringe on patents. Best puck ever, hands down. Mach1>Rocket>IDS
