I guess there's a first time for everything, and this weekend I saw something I've never seen before.

:16 left in the game and Team 1 is awarded a penalty shot.

Penalty Shot Begins - Shooter A from Team 1 advances the puck about 1/3 of the way to Team 2's goalie and Player B from Team 2, while he is sitting on the boards watching the penalty shot, throws his stick onto the rink right behind Player A but the stick does not interfere with Player A. Player A scores on the penalty shot.

Here's the question: If Player A failed in his attempt to make the penalty shot, WHAT'S THE CALL? Would Player A be allowed to retake the penalty shot?

By the way, Player A scored, the ref's told the scorekeeper to run out the clock and Player B was ejected. (Don't know if he got a 10:00 game misconduct or not.) It was Player B's last game of the tournament.

good question. I would have to guess and say that it would be taken over. Wow I can not believe that happened. It may be possible that might not even be in the rules. Who would think that someone would do that.

what rulebook are you using?

generally I'd say you retake the shot, since players are not allowed to interfere at all - and then the clock starts when regular play commences.

But check your rulebook, it should give you the rules on a PS for the league you're playing in.

Hmm...

Probably would have whistled the penalty shot dead, signaled for a re-shoot, and penalized Player B as soon as Player B's stick hit the floor, unless Player A was actually in the motion of deke-ing (sp?) or shooting. Then it would be touchy...not really sure on that one.

Player A was not in the motion of deeking or shooting, he had just started his approach to the goalie and was about 1/3 of the way in.

Just to be clear about my question. I am not, in any way, trying to second guess the call of the officials on the rink. I am proposing a hypothetical situation - that is, what happened if the shooter missed the penalty shot.

Steve,

According to rule 406 (f) "Penalty Shot" in the USA Inline rule book,

If, while the penalty shot is being taken, any player of the opposing team shall interfere with or distract the player taking the shot, a goal shall be awarded.

I kind of thought so. But hey, what the heck do I know.
