Hockey Gives Back at Give Blood Play Hockey Inline Hockey Charity Tournament Oct. 3-5 2008
Greetings everyone!
As you are busy with your family summer activities, or hockey activities at one of the many on-going events, now's the time to also be looking ahead to the next season and the annual Give Blood Play Hockey Inline Hockey Charity Tournament scheduled for October 3-5 at Irvine's 949 Roller Hockey Center.
Calling once more on the popular phrase, Give Blood. Play Hockey, as its namesake, GBPH 2008 is the 2nd annual, three day roller hockey event that invites teams, players, families and the community alike to participate in this exciting, roller hockey and fundraising tournament. In a dream-turned-reality that began last year by event founder Mary Quayle, a then senior and honor student at Mater Dei high school, not only did Mary meet her idol Ryan Getzlaf while attending to speak before an eager crowd of fans, but during the three day, carnival-like event, she and her team of volunteers helped in fundraising nearly $32,000 for the Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and contributed 107 pints of blood in a drive for the Orange County Blood Bank.
“This year takes on a renewed importance for giving – Giving Life – and we’ve raised the bar for our goals,” says Mary.
Included in the fundraising efforts at last year’s event was a campaign that crisscrossed Orange County to help young Evan Cousineau – a 9 year old San Clemente boy who captured hearts everywhere, including the Anaheim Ducks, as he battled with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). Sadly, Evan lost his fight on Nov. 2nd, the day before his and his twin sister Alaina's 10th birthday. This year, the event joins with the Cousineau family and Evan’s journey to raise awareness for the Donate Life California program and the importance (and ease!) of becoming an organ and tissue donor. Learn more about this program at www.donatelifecalifornia.org/.
Proven by the results of 2007, this tournament is a marquis roller hockey event unique from any other and shouldn't be missed! Tournament attendance included 50 youth, high school and adult teams from across the state to compete for the perennial Blood Cup. When not rink side, attendees toured vendor booths, watched raffles and enjoyed fun family events. The GBPH 2007 event was covered by local broadcast media and received attention in national magazine coverage and internet articles. GBPH 2008 proves to be even better and will again be filled with fun events, celebrity citings, and more!
Hosted by the 949 Roller Hockey Center in Irvine, CA and an all-volunteer group of inspired organizers whose Hockey With A Heart spirit is the foundation of this annual event, GBPH is also a serious hockey tournament with a serious purpose! With all this fun, it's also fun to give back!
More information about the tournament is available on the Give Blood Play Hockey Inline Hockey Charity Tournament web site at http://givebloodplayhockey.org/.
