View Full Version : Who's switched from old (Hi-Low) to new (all 80mm) TOUR skates!?!

It's time for new skates, I've been playing on some Tours for almost 5.5 years now. The pair I have (I forget the model, and I'm at work but they were top of the line in ~03) are hi-low design. I guess Tour lost the rights to use the 72/80mm config now so all of their skates are on one size wheel. I was looking at the Cobalt line, but I'm not sure how I feel about losing hi-low.

Who's transitioned from older Tours (or other hi-lows) to the new Tours with all 80mm? How different do they skate? I remember the old days before hi-low and I really don't want skates that feel like that. But I also have been really happy with my Tours, they fit my feet perfect, and I can't complain about 5.5 years of service from a pair of skates so I'm leaning towards ordering Tours again.

Thanks,

TJ

Buy a tour boot and a hi-lo chassis. Have them custom mounted. It isn't nearly as expensive as you may think. You might even be able to use your old chassis...but I would imagine it is pretty worn by now.

I did...but for a dif reason. Some guys even do this because there is an ice boot that they just can't live without.

I went from mission hi-lo to the new tours and the transition period was only 15 minutes for me.

I know a few people who made the switch to the all 80 hummer fine. For me though, it took about a month....I was about to give up. I liked it once I got the hang of it though

I'm kind of mixed, I've loved the weight, stiffness and comfort of the Tour Code Carbon skates, and it didn't take very long to adjust to the straight 80mm setup.

That said, I think my next pair of skates will be hi-lo again. Skating in a straight line feels fine with the 80's and I can get relatively low, but leaning over when crossing over feels strange just because of how high up I feel. I think crossovers felt better on hi-lo's and I could generate more power with them.

Also, just a wear issue - on the Carbon's at least - the tongue's hard plastic outer (which is to help prevent lace bite) eventually cracks and digs into your foot if you lace your skates up tight, so I've started having to leave mine pretty loose to avoid that.
