From beginning to end...
Missouri State stays unbeaten with a 6-4 win over surging Wash U. SLU holds off SIU-Carbondale 7-5 to keep pace in DII.
UM-Rolla beats Illinois in thrilling fashion, 5-4, on third-period shorthanded goals by Joe Altnether and Nik Kettler. Altnether scored twice and had an assist in the game.
Lindenwood looked very impressive in stomping St. Charles 11-1.
In one of the best cross-divisional matchups of the season, UMSL and Truman State played a close one for about a period and a half, until UMSL pulled away. Truman took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, and after UMSL came back to take a 3-2 lead, tied the score 3-3 in the second before Andy Meade's back-to-back goals put UMSL ahead to stay. UMSL went on to win 10-4.
PJ Tallo had a hat trick and seven points for UMSL.
Truman State was more than competitive for the first two periods. This loss should not hurt their Nationals chances at all. Especially considering the effort they put in in their final game of the weekend (more on that later).
Truman got back on track by dominating a solid SIU-Carbondale team in a 9-3 win.
St. Charles B played at 6 pm Saturday, and then played back-to-back games at 6 and 7 am Sunday. SCC B mercied UMR B 10-0 Saturday night, lost 7-2 to Mizzou B in the first game Sunday morning, then took a 3-0 lead into the third period against Lindenwood Black before losing 4-3. Jeff Mobley converted a penalty shot in the final minute for the game-winning goal.
PJ Tallo had another hat trick, and six points, in UMSL's 11-2 win over Meramec. UMSL was missing Adam Clarke and Jeremy Scott due to minor illnesses.
SLU proved that its 7-5 victory last week over Truman State was no fluke. The Bills won the rematch 3-1, led by Shaun O'Rourke, goaltender Brendan Vail, and new addition Andrew Wiltz, who was arguably SLU's most valuable skater last season during their run to the national championship game. Having added Wiltz and O'Rourke over the past two weeks, SLU is a completely different team, with a devastating power play, and now that they've beaten Truman twice, they could be a Regionals favorite. Vail is a quality netminder who could be one of the best in DII nationwide. According to the boxscore, he stopped 22 shots over the first two periods, then seven of eight in the third. Truman State, trailing 2-0 in the second period, had a four-on-two power play for about a minute and a half, but couldn't convert. Adam Pasch drove the dagger home with a goal at 10:12 of the second, putting SLU ahead 3-0.
Lindenwood mercied Meramec 10-0. (According to the boxscore, there was a bit of a tussle.)
SLU closed out its four-game weekend with an impressive 8-3 rout of SEMO. SLU led 5-1 after two goals in the first minute of the second period, and cruised from there. Max Huber and Andrew Wiltz each had a hat trick. The SLU power play was 3-for-5 (not counting an abbreviated man advantage early in the third period).
Wash U beat SIU-Carbondale 4-1 to add another positive to a good second-semester resume that includes handing SLU its only loss in eight games. Wash U is now 11-4-1 in the regular season, including a 5-2-1 record in the month of February -- 5-0 against everyone other than first-place Missouri State. On March 1, Wash U will play Truman State before a cross-divisional game against Middle Tennessee State.
The red-hot UMSL B team came back from a 3-0 deficit to top Lindenwood Black 4-3. After LU Black scored twice in the final :21 of the first period, UMSL trailed 3-0 throughout the second until Jesse Wolfersberger scored on the power play with :21 left in the period. Mike Donley had two goals and an assist during UMSL's three-goal third, including the game-winner with 2:40 to play. Steve Cash was the winner in net. UMSL (14-3-1) is the only team other than first-place Lindenwood Gold to beat Lindenwood Black (12-3-2) this season. UMSL was playing in its only game of the day, and LU Black had played a tough 7 am game against SCC B. That might have been a factor as UMSL owned the third period.
In one of the best games of the weekend -- and of the entire season -- Lindenwood pulled away in the third period to beat Truman State 7-2. The final score is a bit deceiving, as Truman State trailed just 3-2 with less than 9:00 to play, and was VERY competitive throughout the first two periods. I'm not sure that I believe the shot count in the official box score (11-4 and 16-6 in the first two periods). Lindenwood scored two shorthanded goals, and twice scored on delayed penalties. LU didn't take its first lead until Kyle Gouge's shorthanded tap-in with :25 left in he second period. (Of course, in the third, Lindenwood was Lindenwood.)
Truman State faces Wash U at 8 am March 1.
No. 1 Lindenwood will battle No. 2 UMSL at 10 am March 1.
