I had the priviledge to attend the WCRHL event over this weekend in Irvine. As this was my first opportunity to observe collegiate level roller hockey, I can't say enough about just how impressed I was. The level of competition and skills were dazzling and I thank every athlete for their presence and on-going devotion to the sport.
What I was chielfy impressed by was the great sportsmanship demonstrated by so many. Even when conditions could have prevailed otherwise, these athletes would reach out and help their opponent rather than upload the testosterone and fight. I saw it happen time and time again. Hoorah!
I was at this event as a high school league observer. I don't have children involved but I did witness a huge family following for many of the athletes and even a fan base for teams. It was reassuring to see parents and their now adult children still active together as if they were timewarped back into some Saturday morning youth level game of yesteryear.
I also observed both Div. 1 and 2 All-Stars. Again, impressed with the skill level and competition! The contests were both fun for all contestants who took turns with tricks shots; and they were some that were hugely cool! I saw goalies go 2-up in the net and even goalie who took to the floor as a skater and deeked his opponent to score. Defense was skilled but no real hits as it was teammates feeding others to make the next run and shot on goal. I remain of the opinion that this event could have produced gate money with the quality of play I observed.
In closing, a suggestion to the WCRHL; this event could easily be produced into a training film to demonstrate to those younger members of the sport who will someday fill the collegiate ranks just how much fun can be had when they continue to play on and up in this sport. Oh, and hard work to get there too!
Thank you one and all for sticking with it and for all you do. You have one more new fan after this event!
Who knows how long it will be until one day you are the one's bringing your sons and daughters to the rink on Saturday morning and cheering them on.
