So, I see that the team exists this year (roster and all) but they have not played a game nor have any scheduled games according to NCRHA. What's going on with Emory this year?

The southeast division is pretty unorganized this season. So far, two tournaments in November have been cancelled because of scheduling conflicts with the rinks that were going to be used. Emory was scheduled to play in the first tournament of November, either the first or second weekend of November, and then in a tournament this coming weekend in GA. All the teams found out yesterday that the tournament was cancelled and moved to February 2008. That means that teams will be playing about 3 or 4 tournaments the month before regionals next spring. It should be interesting.
Overall, I have been very unimpressed with the ability of the league administrators to organize this league so far this year. I hope to see progress as we go along though. Hope this helps.

Was this something that the SECRHL was responsible for on their part for poor planning or was it the rinks fault?

Thank you rollerhockey8 for your comment!
As for the SECRHL event being postponed, I believe it was a rink that double-booked. Sounds like the SECRHL did their best to solve the problem and get this event rescheduled.
SECRHL League Officials urge you all to contact them directly to voice any concerns you have with this re-schedule, the league in general, or anything that is on your mind. They would also like to urge interested players/parties to get involved with the league, to help it be what you want it to become. Their contact information is available on www.secrhl.org.

To clarify my earlier post, I did not mean to say come off as thinking that the league is doing a terrible job (I apologize if I did), but this year they seem to be more inconsistent than in the past two years I have played.
Once a standard has been set, I have come to expect, or maybe take advantage, of that standard and some things were not developing as fast this year as they have been in the past few years. I am not questioning the ability of the league administrators of completing their job, and as a player, not in constant contact with the league, it isn't always obvious what is developing behind the scenes.

Not to point fingers or place blame...so I won't mention any names/rinks...but one of the SECRHL events that was cancelled this fall due to "double booking" is the same location that this happened 2 years ago. With about the same amount of notice.
Again, not pointing fingers, not taking sides, not doing anything like that...but sometimes events get cancelled/screwed up/whatever for reasons COMPLETELY out of the control of the league, yet they are the ones that emerge with the egg on their face.
Sucks...but thats life.

Is this a common occurance in other regions (cancelling events due to bad planning)?
Is it common to somehow inexplicably manage to only get ONE team from DII in your region a bid to the largest nationals field in the league's history, even though there were two more very viable candidates?
Is it also common for the league to inform a team about a week and a half before payments for nationals are due that they wont be able to pay for your team to go, even though this was their (apparently unofficial) policy, because they failed to collect money from other teams (but still let them participate ALL YEAR.)? (And we were told that no, we would not recieve a credit for this year... so where did the money go? Was the debt forgiven at our expense, or did it go towards something else???)
Everyone involved in the SECRHL is a decent person (except unnamed hypothetical person who won't sue this web site...) to my knowledge, but why all the screw ups?

Not trying to stir the pot, but just looking at things from another perspective. I have been around college inline for many years and from my experience I can tell you two things. #1 - the easy target is not always the right target #2 - Bashing a league on a public forum that is trying to go, improve its reputation and develop a higher level of legitimacy is not really the best thing to do. We aren't on the old NCRHA board (private) where all the users were members of the league.
Is this a common occurance in other regions (cancelling events due to bad planning)?
If the RINK double books a weekend, how is that the league's fault?

Again, not trying to stir the pot, but this statement suggests that you have limited exposure to the level of play in the other regions and the process in which teams are selected for Nats. Also, I thought Elon and Emory got bids last year? Amirite?

Last year, only Emory got a bid to nationals for division II. It was unfortunate that it happened that way for the southeast but I know that some teams, my team included (Elon), kinda choked in the end. We hope to be back this year.

let me first say that I am no longer affiliated with any team, i have graduated and moved back to boston, where they don't know about this "Roller" hockey.
Secondly,
1) I didn't say it was the league's fault, i was asking a general question.
2) I'm asking what the deal with the money was. I know some teams were upset about how it was handled last year. I think it is now a written rule that the team that wins the southeast in each division, has its nationals entry fee paid by the league, but again i am no longer a part of emory or roller hockey, so i don't know if that went through. Personally, i am pretty steamed because we thought our budget was all set for the year, only to hear about this at the very last minute. I Personally cut the 750 dollar check. That is why this issue stung me like it did, and i think that it goes to the heart of the league's method of organization. Its not meant to be personal, just like it was not meant to be personal when they informed me that suddenly we owe 750 dollars more than we thought we did.
3) No, Emory was the only team from southest division II to recieve a bid. However, teams which we beat by one goal each to win the region (Elon and Miami) did not recieve bids. In 2005 we had emory and miami at nationals from the southeast, and elon was there for their conference at the time. in 2006, Elon and Emory came. Last year, down to one DII bid. DI got a lot of teams in though.
It just doesn't seem right to me, and I don't know if it was the league's fault directly, but I feel they had to be involved somehow...
And as for the level of play between divisions... thats one more reason to send a couple teams from the southeast. To send a million from the east, and 1 from the southeast would mean that you have judged us as inferior. We have all had this conversation before though...

I am absolutely positive that Elon did not get a bid to nationals in the spring of 2007. We may have been given alternate status but that is the most. If we got a bid, we would've been in St. Louis.
We played in the Raleigh nationals in 2006 and many previous years before that. If you're wondering what happened last year, there is a thread somewhere in the forums that explains our downfall.

Miami was an alternate, i don't think Elon even got alternate status... but i could be wrong. Miami wasn't even the first alternate... as ship got in off the list before them.
Rumor was that the SECRHL rep didn't go to the meeting where the bids for nationals were decided, but instead sent a d1 school's rep, and that is why we had so many d1 schools and so few d2 schools. This could also explain why Miami got onto the list and not elon (Although its a tough call to decide who had the better year), because in all likelyhood the d1 rep who went was from the FLA area. That is why i brought it up, because it seems to one of a chain of misteps in the league...
BTW, i don't really see how Elon had that bad of a cold streak. You guys lost to red hot miami and millersville on that crappy icecourt in savannah, where nobody plays well ... ever. We did beat you guys twice in regionals, but the second game was very close...
And furthermore, you guys beat NC STATE earlier in the year... the D1 regional champ. Maybe they had an off day, but seems like if people can put the millersville game up as evidence against you, they should have thought about the NC State game as evidence that you can beat some pretty damn good teams.

I love the ice court in Savannah. But the Savannah rink is the one who doubled book that even in November. It was not the SECRHL's fault. I'm pretty sure it was completely out of their hands as I talked to a high ranking secrhl official and he was very dissapointed as the tournament included many teams from florida actually goin to a tournament somewhere outside the state of florida.

Nothing towards the teams or SECRHL but that rink may be the worst rink Shippensburg has ever played on...it was a positive experience going down to the SECRHL, but the rink itself wasn't up to the standard that we have learned to expect. Not only was the rink not sport court, there was nothing close to locker rooms , and if it wasn't for some nice Elon fans and some awesome Elon players, the entire weekend would have seem so much worst...

Haha... yeah sorry about that. I do remember we were grumbling about it amongst ourselves: "Must suck to drive all the way down here to play on this rink." But at least you won right? Nightlife is good, but if you drive all the way down there i'm sure you actually want to win the games not play on no sleep and a hangover.
You've seen the NC facility. You NE guys should get in on that if anyone comes down again. SC is sportcourt, and a nice facility (has a skatepark in the building, good lighting.) but again there is no locker room, and the glass is floor to ceiling (which i hate)

It wasn't "that" bad of a rink. I remember getting dressed using the rolled up turf in the corner as a bench. North Carolina isn't that far at all, however the weekends never work themselves out. If it was at all possible, we would be down there playing more games as soon as possible.
After what I saw this weekend I'm sure Emory will be happy to be getting back the SE best player in d2 next semester....
Did they lose anyone else from last year's team because they looked a lot worse than last year?
Elon seems to have improved from last year as well, same as Western Carolina.

I can't say i was at all surprised about the Elon/Emory score...looking at their roster i just assumed they will struggle. Getting blown out by a up and down Elon team could be the signs of a rough season. It was the first weekend they played and rosters are not set at this point. Would be interesting to see if their roster changes at the second semester. Who is coming back in the second semester?

This story has been beat to death, over and over...
But take it from someone who KNOWS what happened, rather than someone who only speculates what happened. An SECRHL rep WAS in the national bids meeting. The rep from each division presents a team from their respective division to be considered for the next bid and then the committee votes. Your regions rep can plead your case until he is blue in the face, but if the rest of the committee doesn't agree...you will not get the votes. Reputation goes a long way, both for and against you. The SECRHL has consistently had good (argueably great) DI teams UF, UCF and NC State. However, when compared to other regions DII schools, the SECRHL is not known for consistent powerhouses. Just look at the DII standings from this year versus last year. So when the 2nd or 3rd DII selection is put on the table, they have a so-so record and they did not fair well in cross-regional play, the other regions don't have much to go by when they judge you. In your opinion this may suck...but don't hate the people following the system, hate the system. And if that is your opinion of the system, step up to suggest a positive resolution for the future, rather than complaining about the past. However, at the end of the day, I am sure you will be met with the same response..."Win more games and it won't be an issue".
This wasn't meant to be rude, or disrespectful, but seriously, the complaints about last year's selections have gone on long enough. They come from just 1-2 teams in the SECRHL and from the "informed" point of view, they are completely baseless.

06'-07' Regular season results:
Shippensburg 6-6-4 (went to nationals)
Elon 14-4-1 (did not go to nationals)
Clearly it is not just a matter of "Winning more games". Elon didn't have a "so so" record.
We have all played the "transitive property" of hockey to compair teams and inevitably prove that nearly every team in DII is better than Stony Brook. So when you say "well millersville beat elon and shipp beat millersville, so every team in the east must be better than elon, and thus elon can't go to nationals until all teams form the east do", this may seem valid to you.
But, we killed Millersville, who tied Stony Brook, and Elon beat us last season, which means, according to the logic of everyone who points to comparisons based on interleague play to justify nationals bids, that Elon is better than Stony Brook.
If you are going to be subjective and say "well the east is better than the southeast" then you can't ignore Miami's mostly d1 schedule, and Elon's victory over NC State, and the incredibly close playoff we had last year in the southeast. So what is the next thing everyone says "Its your record", or "Just win more games", which is stupid if you look at Elon.
Finally, everyone likes to post their divisions record at nationals over the years to show their division's superiority. Well frankly, every year is a new year, so I don't see how this makes sense at all. But if you must look at nationals records, look at last year where two east teams combined to win one game in nine contests.

Elon is located in Elon, NC about an hour from the city of Raleigh where the Carolina Hurricanes play. Raleigh is also the home of NC State and their inline hockey team.
It is unfortunate that some people do not take the time to do some simple research to find out about schools and teams. With the infinite amount of information available to us, it is not hard to Google Elon University or just simply, Elon. It is also disappointing to have someone take the time to actually tell us they could care less about a situation that others truly care to talk about. While the Southeast division does not have teams that finish in the Elite 8 at nationals every year, for many consecutive seasons before last years national tournament, Elon was there and played well. I know that no one will ever know where every team is from, but you should have a general idea. It is these examples of ignorance that drive the teams in the Southeast to succeed and be recognized on the national level, to put us on the map, and to demand respect from other schools and players in the future.

unfortunately i couldn't get the brew in washington because i wasn't there. however, when given the opportunity to drink that sort of coffee i have enjoyed the same. w/ that said not only was my post idiotic and rambling, but it was rude, harsh and cruel. it was designed to mean nothing other than a bunch of nonsensical jibberish and I hope to be dumber for having said it as well. Now put on your engineers hat train and stay out of the engine car while enjoying your 21st birthday. just remember anyone who misses practice on the 6th of december 2007 will hereinafter be rupauls waterboy. didn't you say something about being out that night?
well since i went to practice on my birthday last year, i think i should be able to celebrate this year. i still might be there though

you know it really irks me when all of these people from the southeast try to turn a post about the se conference into a discussion about the southeast, i try to change it into a bunch of nonsense and they go right back to the point. with all due respect to emory and elon i would love to see emory regain its strength and be in nationals giving us an opportunity to exact revenge upon emory. additionally, it seems to me that the se got screwed in births at nationals and emory faired pretty well particularly in round robin.
mr. train you need not be at practice on your 21st birthday unless you hope to join in the coaching staff in beers at the conclusion thereof. in which case you would need to let me know before i depart for practice so i may garner appropriate beverages. incidentally, the budweiser fudge keeps in back has a 90's born on date. the true celebration comes only after the cup is hoisted by the white team defeating the dark team after a hard fought game. for all of those unaware of what i am talking about this has nothing to do with race.

If your bringing the beers ill drive back down there tomorrow. The skateland is a little easier to find my way out of after a long night of pong then your house was. fudge will give you those buds for an "affordable" price though

the beers will be present and the mongoose is always welcome to join in hoisting the skateland cup. unfortunately, it is presently sleeting outside. now the beers for cash that were purchased for $5 a six pack and are available for various prices depending on when you ask, who you are, and how desperate the seller would be to get rid of them, they come with accompanying free gloves. however it is $60 for the left glove, the right one will be thrown in.
