Sportsmanship; from,The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language; n. The qualities and conduct befitting a sportsman.

Sportsman; same publication; n. 1. A man who is enthusiatic about and participates in sports. 2. One who abides by the rules of a contest and accepts victory or defeat graciously. 3. Brian Trohalides.

Brian Trohalides, a true sportsman. Thanks Troho for hooking us Rats up after the game Saturday. It's always a pleasure hanging and talking with you my man. P.I.H.A. needs more ambassadors like yourself.

On the flip-side, it would have been appropriate for the other half of the Minutemen to display such sportsmanship. Not participating in the oldest tradition in all of sports, the game ending handshake, was a bit disturbing. What happened to, "you win some, you lose some"? To the Minutemens young tender, learning to lose graciously, only makes you a better player. You will never sincerely appreciate winning, until you learn to accept defeat.

Good points Roger, proper sportsmanship is an important rule that all athletes should follow. However I'm fairly certain that at some point in most of our hockey "careers" we've made the unfortunate choice of displaying poor sportsmanship. I don't believe its very mature to judge someone by one game/series and then jump on a public forum and call them out. Especially a more experienced, veteran player like yourself who has probably seen a fair share of unsportsmanlike conduct. People can tend to react emotionally in competitive situations and while it doesn't make it right, its hardly a reason to devote a post to, especially if its one incident. I don't see what drawing attention to that is going to accomplish. Besides, good sportsmanship would also involve leaving any "incidents" that do occur on the rink.

All I'm saying is, if we had someone follow every game we ever played, house league, travel league, tournament or otherwise and wait for a display of poor sportsmanship to occur and run out and make a post about it, there might be a different opinion about a lot of people on this message board. Try to show some restraint.

As far as Troho goes, he's just a suck up :p
Seriously Bri, I can't recall anything in all your hockey playing years that would tarnish that Lady Bing reputation of yours...Hmmmm. ;)

I think you just did.

And in response to Rogers post I think he meant the Grizzlies, not the Minutemen. Saturdays game between the Roller Rats and the Grizzlies was not a pleasant one for anyone involved. And thanks Roger just tryin to do my part and while I may have differences with guys on the rink as soon as the final buzzer sounds all is forgotten.

Keep it up Joey and I wont make guys apologize to you anymore when they slap you around :)

That was a case of mistaken identity! Besides, I learned I can take a punch that weekend. :p I can't believe that guy had the balls to pick a fight with Byers standing right there next to me.

If that is the case, then what I posted before was not ture. Spider Rat just make sure to get the names right. Alot of people go on IHC. If I still can I am going to delete my previous post or contact Richard. Troho you are right, I realized it after, when i was out getting coffee.

How could anyone not be intimidated by you and Byers in a dark parking lot?

For those of you not aware of Joey's imense frame, hes about 6', 170 in full goalie gear right out of the shower...and Byers was so thin that he looked like a bobblehead when he skated.

I took a look at the Boston Roller Rats Pro roster on the PIHA web site and no goalie by the name of Joe and I couldn't figure out who Byers is. Who are these guys.

To simplify my earlier post, Troho, a class act. A few Minutemen, well lets try to be a little more like sportsmen. Yes Joe, I've certainly had my share of unsportsmanlike behavior. Perhaps if someone told me what I tried to tell your brother, when I was his age, maybe my incidents of poor sportsmanship would have been less. We are playing in a "professional" league, all teams should act like "professionals". Maybe a few of those guys haven't learned that yet and posting it in black and white, might remind them where they are. I'm sure if we had lost, and skated off acting the way they did, there would have been a post about how the Rats acted in defeat. That game ending handshake is a time honored tradition. It seperates us from all other sports. Getting beat and skating away saying the team that just beat you "sucks", well that's just not professional. Had I'd been the coach of that team, I would have dragged the players that skated off back onto the floor to participate.

Spiderrat, I have seen enough PIHA games to know that if you are going to try to convert 100% of the PIHA players to adopt an attitude of sportsmanship - you have a long hard fight ahead of you. Please don't pick and choose whom you think needs to see the light.

Spider Rat I gave you the benefit of the doubt and deleted my message this morning. If you can tell me that your team never got upset during a game than I will say my men lacked some sportmanship. We shook your hands and did nothing to disrespect your team. And no if the tables were turned and you were upset about the loss, game, refs, other team, or the guy in the stands or what ever may be the case, we would not post on IHC. I am not stating that any of these examples were the reason we were upset. I am just using some examples, that can occur in any game, to prove my point. You are talking about the Grizzlies not shaken hands, make a mistake and give the wrong name but still take a shot at us. Your not acting real sportman like. It seems you are talking about the Growl, Minutemen and Grizzlies, anyone other team you want to add. You should listen to Jerome (imasamurai), he is absolutely correct on the points that he has stated today.

I'm not sure why you keep saying that I was talking about the Grizzles, I wasn't, I was talking about half of the Minutemen players who skated right to the locker room instead of shaking hands. Including your goalie who decided to verbally attack us while walking to his car with his Mom. We have taken a couple beatings this year and have acted professionally after the final buzzer and shaken the opponents hands. That's just what you do. Stop putting words in my mouth. You may think that by me posting something was unprofessional, well that's your opinion. Perhaps I should have left the teaching of sportsmenship to the coach. I rarely see such a lack of respect for another team, so that alone prompted me to type. If we act that way after a game, feel free to call us out. But I doubt that will happen. I play with a group of professional, classy hockey players that know that whether you win or lose, you still show the other team respect, and shake their hands after a game. You're making too big a deal of my thread.

By the way, I was not talking about the Growl, nor was I dissing the Grizzles. Again, stop trying to start something by putting words in my mouth. Perhaps you should re-read my original post.

Spider Rat, Troho was the one who said he tought you made a mistake and you meant the Grizzlies. As for the Growl I got confused when one of the Growl guys posted today. So I am sorry about the miscommunication.

One I will talk to my goalie Kyle about the parking lot incident. We had two people that were not in the hand shake beacuse one got kicked out in the middle of game 2, and the other was asked by the ref to leave the bench and go to the locker room. So they had no choice.

As for the other 6 players and a goalie that we had they all shook hands. They were all in front of me. I saw them do it. So that is my point. Once again I will talk to my goalie, not happy to hear about that. See you on Saturday, best of luck.

Thanks Justin. You guys have a very good team and I'm sure once the Northeast division enters the final two or three weeks, we will surely see your team right in the mix of the play-off run. Good luck with the rest of the season. This is going to get fun.

I'm surprised this thread didn't get pulled by Richard himself haha. Two guys didn't shake hands for obvious reasons. There was a lot more wrong with that day then the hand shake. As for the actual games, if anyone even cares at this point . .they were good! Boston is a great team and definetley one not to under estimate . . I think both teams could aggree that somethings could've been done a little different from the officiating end of things, but what are ya gonna do right. Great games guys, and I look forward to another set this weekend.

Thanks roger i have been waiting for a reason to sign up for this site.
i should appoogize for my actions at the game and i do but not to u but to my own team. see i under stand were u come from talking about bad sportsmanship but is this also coming from the team that made comments all though out the game talking trash even when they were up by countless goals or was this the team that was laughing on the bench and making fun of another team during the game i understand thats part of the game but wouldn't that be unsportsmanlike as well. see i might have had a problem at the end of that game but i know i have one thing over u and thats that i can win gracefully to i don't flant my win in the opponenets face because i know how much it sucks to lose. so i'm not saying i was right in what i did but neither were u or ur team and as a matter of fact i asked u why your team was being unsportsmanlike when i was "walking to the car with my mom" (and yes my mom loves me) and u responded with because we were we wining. So its ok to be unsportsmanlike but only if u win.

it reveals to all that there is a Team Paradise who i hope to be playing for in the near future...

Roger is a well respected person and player from everything i've heard. I would guess that he started this thread in some haste out of frustration with a particular situation and he felt like he had to get something off of his chest. That being said i think we all know by now that this probably isn't the place for these kind of discussions when it's just as easy to send an email or private message... at the same time we've probably all said things we regret at some point, which may or may not apply to both sides in this case...

Team Paradise on the other hand, is a very relaxed team that gets along with everyone...

What did this thread accomplish? Just the fact that Kyle failed English. That is one brutal post maybe we can get Plaugher to proof read for Kyle in the future.

Don't bother, it's pointless. There is so much wrong with that attempt at a sentance. You would have thought he would have atleast capitalize the first letter.

English major, not so much, literate, yes.

Sentance? come on Tro. When mocking anothers spelling and grammar at least check to make sure that yours is correct!! This message board is starting to look like an A.I.M. converstation between sixth graders. ( And i mean actual sixth graders, not adults who spell like them )
